I got a Fuji-Film Finepix S5700 for Christmas, which I am about to buy a 1GB memory card for...
The camera takes both SD and XD cards.
And price wise I would be most tempted to buy a SD card as they're a fair bit cheaper.

But I'm not sure if XD cards have any advantages over an SD except making you skint quicker

Could anyone tell me which card would be the best to go for out of the two, and explain to me what advantages / disadvantages each card has...

Sorry I sound like a right n00b here, I know what an SD card is just not sure about the XD...

Yes. There doesn't appear to be much difference between the two at all, apart from that the XD is smaller in size.

SD are accepted by more devices than XD.
And cheaper.

Sounds like i'll be going for an SD card then...
Will a standard SD card do or is it best to get a high performance one?
(Memory card, not Vauxhall Nova )

I don't have an XD card, but memory cards I do have tend to be the cheaper ones of the range. Just make sure you stick to a good brand though.

Yeah, definately.
I've had three Sandisk cards, and they've been quite reliable. Although the case on my 1gb card (from eBay, I think it's a cheap Chinese ripoff, but it works) has started to split open slightly. It's not a problem though.

I use both a 512MB Fujifilm XD card and Olympus 1GB card in my trusty Olympus and have filled both cards up ands discharged them with no problems. I wish my Olympus used SDs though!

I got a 2gb SD card for my camera (same as pedned) and that's working a treat, even though it's a boots one. Go for an SD

Just to keep you all informed,
I went to Argos today and paid for a Fuji 512mb card and when i collected the item they handed me a PNY (whoever they are) 1GB card... I was like :-? ehh. this aint what i ordered...
The item number was the same as the Fuji and it had a receipt stuck to it with the item number and Fuji SD memory card on...

I had checked before hand and there were Fuji cards in stock. But I jsut took it, I bought it home and it works fine...

And after closer inspection, its exempt form the 30 day money back guarantee.... What shall I do?
Keep it and hope it lasts?
Or take it back and tell them that its not compatible with my camera and not what I ordered?

You should really have refused it at the time and said it wasn't what you ordered.

The 30 day money back guarantee applies to their "voluntary" returns on items (eg: you don't like it), rather than their statutory obligations (eg: stops working in a resonable amount of time).

I'd just take it back now and say that it is not what you ordered and you didn't realise at the time. The goods you recieved did not correspond with the description in the catalogue. Thus, Argos are in breach of s13 Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended)

(1) Where there is a contract for the sale of goods by description, there is an implied [F1 term] that the goods will correspond with the description.

(3) A sale of goods is not prevented from being a sale by description by reason only that, being exposed for sale or hire, they are selected by the buyer.

I can only assume a staff member stuck the wrong catalogue number on the PNY one.

I suppose as the Fuji ones are only a few quid more the quality is similar, so you might as well keep it.

But the catalogue number it printed inside the packaging to the card bit...
yet the receipt states the same number but with fuji on... and the catalogues also states the same number...

PNY are quite well respected in the fash storage industry. They also make graphics card, USB drives and motherboards which are very reliable.

Stick with it.

I have 2 2GB SDs for the Fuji if there empty 576(fine quality 7mp) and about 36mins of Video on 640x480 30fps works well!, If you plan to use it alot, use the EVF(Electronic View Finder) Saves battery power by miles!.

I have 1 2gb XD. 1 1gb XD and 1 512mb. All work fine. Though I'd prefer if my camera took SD.

They have some dirt cheap SD cards (and other memory cards too) and reliable too, PLUS they offer free shipping on most and next day too.

Just dont use Google Checkout its useless, no word of a lie and you wont get next day shipping as it takes longer to process.

XD cards are being phased out because of the instability issued encountered after updating the firmware to M/H cards. I work in a photo lab and we have two or three dead XD cards a month pass through. I would always recommend people the Fuji Cards because of the 5 year Warranty,

Remember to format the card in the camera before use.
