As some of you may know, we have an ongoing ticket gallery project which has been running in the background for a few years. It is now finally making good progress. The ticket gallery will be hosted initially on flickr and you can find the albums here.

While the main structure of the gallery is now in place, please bear in mind that it is still very much in its infancy in terms of its development so there may well be some errors. If you spot any then please let me know by PM.

There are currently just under 400 tickets in the gallery, however I am looking for more images to add to it, aiming to be as comprehensive as it can be. Each ticket is classified using tags so you can search through the whole gallery using any valid tag. (I have not yet added any tag in terms of ticket stock RSP number or TIS information, which will be forthcoming in due course.)

I am looking for contributions for more tickets to be displayed and would appreciate any help you may be able to give. I apologise if you have already sent us some previously. I have put all the worthy ones I have access to in the gallery so if you have some examples of a different design, or a different ticket type, or a different layout, or font, or just about anything that looks different, I would be happy to check them out.

There is a minimum requirement for resolution which is as follows:

Common stock: 400px by 250px
SPORTIS stock: 250px by 350px
ELGAR stock: 700px by 300px
Print@Home: 625px by 875px
PERTIS: 250px by 250px
RTV: 700px by 350/250px
Normal Width Till Receipt: 400px by appropriate length in multiples of 25px
Narrow Bus Ticket Stock: 200px by appropriate length in multiples of 25px

A sensible size is required of all those tickets not listed above.

If your ticket comes with mandatory reservation, it would be appreciated if you can send me the ticket and the reservation together. Similarly for excess fares, the original ticket as well, although neither are compulsory. I will be happy to work with whatever is available. It would also help if you can send me an image for the back of the tickets too.

I have yet to write descriptions for the images so please bear with me.

I have enclosed the technical details below for anyone who may be interested.

Thank you all in advance for your help with the project.

Edit:

I don't have a comprehensive list of tickets required but if anyone has scans of the following, please let me know.

  • New style tickets (any);
  • EMT/ScotRail GroupSave;
  • Chiltern Small Group;
  • Network Daytripper Plus (West Midlands, £2 and £1.20 versions);
  • Gold Card;
  • Inclusive tour tickets;
  • Weekender tickets;
  • Season ticket replacement/duplicate;
  • Various smartcards inc the Key in its many guises;
  • M-ticket screenshots;
  • Various sleeper tickets inc inclusive ones & supplements;

If you have anything else which is not already in the ticket gallery, please do get in touch. Your continued support is very much appreciated.

Detailed Structure
(Correct as of 19.52, 26th December 2014)

Each sub-section (eg. 1.1) is an album.
Each sub-section number and heading are also two tags for all tickets in the album.
Each section is a collection of albums.

I have named the photos in the format of "section number + serial number", eg. 4.1.001, then 4.1.002, and so on.

All tags are listed in square brackets and are optional. Tags linked by parallel lines are exclusive, and those immediately either side of a plus sign can co-exist. Tags that are "greater than" the neighbour are their superset.

Which section should this one go in? ;)

http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/bnm/fgwcfnr_zps34c61ecf.jpg

Issued from a 'car park' type machine installed at Clifton Down Station in 2011. Printed on plain white paper 60mmx60mm. Slightly glossy front.

Machine since vandalised and the project abandoned by FGW and the local Community Rail Partnership.

Thanks. That's not a Permit to Travel, is it? Sorry I don't know what it is as I have never seen it before.

It is indeed a ticket. The Severn Beach Line (despite its name conjuring up images of a seaside branch it actually serves a huge urban population) in Bristol has an ongoing problem in that all services are effectively 'pay trains', but at busy times it is not possible for staff to sell tickets to all passengers. This leads to long queues at the gateline at Bristol TM.

When the line was subsidised by Bristol City Council, the various stakeholders (FGW, Council, Community Rail Partnership) decided to install simple 'car park' type machines at the busiest stations to issue tickets for inbound/return journeys to Bristol TM. If I remember correctly, the only destination option available was Bristol TM. Only Clifton Down and Redland (being two of the busiest stations on the line) had the machines installed.

An image of one of the machines can be seen in this blog post from a local councillor:
http://cotham.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/new-tickets-new-ticket-machines.html

Railcard discounts on the Severn Beach Line are set at 50% off for journeys wholly on the line, therefore these 'car park' type machines only needed one button option for both child and railcard fares.

Repeated vandalism soon saw the machines switched off, and whilst they are still in situ they are no longer usable.

Since 2011, passenger numbers on the Severn Beach Line have continued their strong growth and this has been addressed with additional staff on trains selling tickets. Because of the huge growth in passenger numbers there is no longer a local subsidy from Bristol City Council, so FGW have addressed the revenue collection issues by employing more staff to issue tickets on board. On the busiest services you will occasionally see two Assistant Ticket Examiners in addition to a guard with an Avantix. Every service in the morning peak will have at least one ATE.

We still get the massive queues at the gateline at Bristol TM though. Even with the extra staff on the trains, such has been the growth in passenger numbers, they can't get to everyone.

Typical weekday morning scene at Bristol TM following the arrival of a Severn Beach Line service:

http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt68/bnm/IMAG0130_zps22e2361a.jpg

There is now talk of a portakabin ticket office and full size TVM at Clifton Down. TVM likely to be secured in a strong lockable cabinet, opened and closed at the start and end of day.

All told I think my ticket is, and will remain, something of a rarity/novelty. Bids accepted. :lol:

Good to see this underway - I shall start scanning items from my collection very soon! Just a few questions to bb21:

- How would you like to receive images? - By e-mail or through some other method? If by e-mail, would you prefer images attached directly to the e-mail, or .zip files (e.g. per category)?
- Would you like any commentary around the tickets, suggested tags, etc., or simply the image?
- Are we starting at APTIS/PORTIS, or are you interested in for example INTIS and the early Autelca TVMs?
- Would you like images to be cropped and straightened first, and one image per file? .jpg format?

I look forward to looking through what we have so far (after the weekend, though - am away :))

If you could send them as attachments to an email then it would be grand, one ticket per jpg file preferably. No need to classify them into categories as they might be amended depending on how many images I get eventually. I will PM you the email address. As long as the pictures are of the minimum resolution (with some leeway if you can't get anything better) then I could always do the processing but as usual, any help in getting them to the correct standard is always appreciated since this project is taking up a large amount of my time as is. It is OK to have a narrow white band around the picture as the dimensions don't fit exactly.

I would say accompany anything before APTIS with a brief description if possible, as I may not be familiar with them. The same applies to anything unusual. I am not adding descriptions to the albums yet but will do so at a later stage. At the moment, the focus is on getting the pictures in the right places.

No zip files please as I don't open them in emails for security reasons.

I have loads of tickets that I can scan when I return from the Fares workshop tomorrow. Mainly parkeon tvm types varying from advance to day returns, but if it help I don't mind scanning :)

That would be wonderful, especially non-Y-P ones. I think I have enough Y-P ones in the collection now for regular tickets.

Lol may disappoint you there, although I am sure I have some un-discounted ones stashed away for my pre-10am travels!

Did you want any more RTVs? I have some ScotRail ones right now, and my housemate has some FGW ones. All issued recently.

I probably have more things as well - I noted the lack of an ALR, I can scan my old one. Is there some thread of missing tickets somewhere so I can cross-reference?

Yes the ALR is missing as I never need to buy them. As to RTVs, have a look and see what is already there. I think I have a comprehensive list already but if you have one that looks different, then great.

I haven't done a missing tickets list yet. I put them in as soon as possible so you can just have a look in the album for yourself. Plenty of things aside from the "normal" tickets are missing. As to Rovers and Rangers, if you have an example for any that is not yet included, I am happy to build up a database for all of them.

I think you already have both FGW and ScotRail RTVs, yes. I'm pretty sure I do have a permit to travel design that you are missing, though, so I'll upload that too at some poin

Where would a ticket error like this go? Will there be a special section for errors? It's a day ticket issued on season stock; from a machine obviously as it's squared off and has a sprocket hole, so clearly someone loaded the rolls into the wrong trays that day.

Unfortunately I don't have a better resolution scan of this one.

I have a very Healthy pile of tickets some of which may be of interest, I think I will wait for a missing ticket list to see if I can match some up for you.

I won't come up with a missing list yet as most categories can still benefit with at least a few more examples. Anything unusual is very welcome.

The only categories which already have a healthy collection are those of single/returns (and RTVs), but even those can still benefit from a more mixed range of concessions, including anything which is not discounted by Y-P.

Are these any use? If they are I can get them properly scanned in.

Is that ticket endorsement? That would be wonderful.

Yeah, I will get it scanned in tomorrow - I have a few other randomly discounted ones and other tickets that are not there.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Who do I send them to? I have found a few others that I haven't seen up. They are a bit big though - I think Flickr automatically scales them down.

I can't see any examples quickly looking through but I have:
some "LORRC" off peak tickets
A LOCRC discounted Ride Cornwall Ranger.

Also how about an album with examples of different railcards (personal details blanked out)

Ah, interesting you mention that, I have an LOCRC discounted ticket too (was a Devon Ranger). Given that my railcard is a YP one, I guess it's a good job that I didn't run into an RPI with that ticket which I guess was incorrectly issued ;)

I was previously issued a ticket showing the wrong railcard. The ticket office wrote (barely legible) on the back of the ticket "valid with D+C R.card - office error"

I don't go further than Plymouth generally speaking so a Devon and Cornwall railcard at £10 is best value for me (I became too old for a Y-P anyway at my last birthday). I saved £36 in the first 3 weeks of it being issued, as I was car-less for a few weeks!

Ah fair enough - I think in my case nobody noticed; be it the ticket office staff who issued it, me, or any of the TMs. It was only when I got home that I was curious as to whether they were now using a new abbreviation for 16-25 railcard!

As for the value - can certainly imagine it. Just a few local journeys and you've got your £10 back.

Anyway, I'll leave it there so that the thread can get back on topic.... :lol:
