Seems your link hasn't worked.

http://londonist.com/2014/11/2015-transport-fares-good-news-for-pay-as-you-go.php

If you use Pay As You Go (PAYG) on Oyster or contactless to get around London’s transport system, there’s big news for you in next year’s fares announcement: the cost of peak daily capping is being seriously reduced.

Peak and off peak capping are being withdrawn and replaced by one set cap per fare zone. If you travel within zones 1-3 you’re laughing, as the new cap is lower than the previous off peak rate. If you live further out and travel into the centre off peak, you’re likely to be more piqued as the cap is lower than the current peak but higher than off peak.

The reason behind this change is the campaign to bring in a part-time travelcard. Long the favourite cause of the Liberal Democrats, earlier this year Boris Johnson asked Transport for London to look into a travel option to help people who don’t work the traditional five day week. We’ve all assumed this would mean something like a three day travelcard, but instead TfL has just slashed daily caps to make it cheaper for people who travel ad hoc in peak time. So now, if you live in zone 3, you’ll only need to take a return tube journey and a bus and you’re quids in. It should also iron out some of the discrepancies between Oyster PAYG and contactless users, where contactless has the benefit of weekly capping but Oyster doesn’t.

Elsewhere: yes, other fares are going up. Seven day travelcards are increasing by between 2.2% and 2.5%, single cash fares are going up by 10p (unless you want to travel further than zone 5, where you’ll get a 20p-30p increase) and PAYG single fares are going up by 10p. Day travelcards are going up with a bump too: the off peak day zone 1-6 and peak zone 1-2 travelcards will no longer exist, making the cheapest day travelcard a whopping £12.

On buses, a single fare will increase 5p to £1.50 but the daily PAYG cap remains the same at £4.40. The one day bus and tram pass is also being reintroduced, costing £5, to help tourists and infrequent visitors who are foxed by cashless buses. It’ll still need to be bought at a station or ticket stop though.

One day travelcard to increase from £8.90 to £12.00 to encourage switching to Oyster and Contactless. Ouch!

everyone will have to use oyster then as paper tickets will be prohibitively expensive. Are they available to buy in TVMs?

or contactless

There is nothing in the announcement about railcard discounts. This is what we really need some further info on.

What will be the effect of that on outboundary Travelcards? That is significant, and to be honest may as well, if they are increased to that level, lead to their abolition as they will very rarely be the best value choice in that case.

OTOH I can see why TfL might want to switch everything to contactless/Oyster - imagine the saving if they only had to maintain the paper ticket acceptance machinery at a small number of barriers at each London terminus (for through tickets) rather than across the network. The cost must now be disproportionate to the utility.

Oyster cards aren't

Yes they are. A significant number of Tube ticket machines have been modified to vend them - there is now at least one in every station, except for one station somewhere in East London for some reason (I forget which one).

So am I right in thinking the following?
- Zones 1-6 Travelcard and a Network Railcard this weekend it would be £5.90
- From next year it would be £11.70

What about (and very relevant today) armed forces railcards? - if it turns out to be more expensive for them this could backfire badly for TFL.

I thought the general public was too dumb to understand the presence of zone 1–3 and 1–5 caps, hence the need for ‘simplification’ and their removal? 'Cause, oh, they're back again.

I also note that off-peak caps haven't been abolished entirely: they still exist for caps beyond zones 1–6 (e.g. 1–9), contrary to the article posted earlier.

The one saving grace is that the daily bus price cap has remained the same. My levels of train/tube travel in London have definitely fallen over the past half decade as fares have been increased, non-zone-1 caps removed etc., and I can't see that changing now that off-peak travel has increased by an extortionate 35% (as a zone 6 resident). I'm basically being priced off the rails and on to the buses. :(

Members of the forces (in uniform and on presentation of ID) travel free on all TfL services.

Thought that was only during the 2012 Olympics and around Remembrance Day/Armistice Day?
No, it's all year round, and has been in place since last year.

aren't forces personnel encouraged not to wear their uniform when off duty?
Some personnel have claimed that, but a recent letter from high up within the services has reiterated that they *must* be in uniform and possession of their ID card in order to claim this concession.

Very bad news for Railcard holders who require paper tickets. At present the only sensible option for off-peak travel for users of the Network, Two Together or Family Railcards, or additional travellers on a Gold Card, is to buy an Off Peak Travelcard, thanks to the abolition of Off Peak paper tickets.

A £2 hike on the ODT will mean that it'll often be cheaper to forsake the Railcard discount and use Oyster. Effectively, the implementation of smart ticketing has removed the Railcard discount for journeys within London.

I think what we're seeing is the final big push towards Contactless and Oyster within the Travelcard zones. The rise of the Off-Peak One Day Travelcard to £12 will price out all but those who really do need the flexibility of being able to ride the system without touching out at some point in their journey.

I have in the past when my local station's Oyster readers on the TVM are down or the ticket office is shut purchased the £8.90 travelcard as an alternative. This will no longer be the case.

Incidentally, another crafty charge TfL are bringing in is a £3 charge for returning an Oyster Card within a month of purchasing. This is surely to get tourists to move to Contactless?

So if I have understood this correctly a person with a Gold card/network railcard etc will now pay almost 3 x the amount? If so why is this not all over the media?

I hadn't grasped that at first. You seem to be correct, unless the £12 ADT will from next year allow for a Gold Card / NSE discount.

It's slightly over double the amount though, not thrice.

I will be making noise about this if it is indeed the case that the ADT will not allow Railcard discounts.

Sorry, posting before reading through properly. The £12 fare is the ODT, and there's no announcement that it'll not allow a discount. So it should be £8.00* instead of £5.90. The ADT will remain at £17.00.

* A 34% discount would make it £7.92, but TfL states that a group discount of 34% will be available, which makes it £8.

Could someone confirm that the armed forces 1/3 off railcard gives a 1/3 off regardless of whether they are in uniform or not. If so Lib Dems in the London Assembly are responsible for their travel costs of a Z 1-6 travel card more than doubling.

I work in ticket offices in outer London stations on weekends. The punters daytripping into town will be overjoyed at the price increase from £17.80 to £24 for a pair of Travelcards. And kids having to pay £6.00 :o. They can't even get a child discount loaded onto an Oyster for miles from where I am!

A lot of small groups travel through where I work, but not often 10+ together. The new 33% group discount will be of limited use. Funnily enough, I had a customer the other day wanting a group Travelcard. I explained that they aren't valid on the line and we didn't have the stock to issue them. The source of confusion was an email from TfL clearly stating they could be purchased from there. I was surprised at what I was reading and could only apologise. Seems it the information was just a bit premature

A lot of travellers during the week will be happy about the reduction in the price of the Anytime Travelcard - I seldom do weekdays shifts and when I do, I only do lates so it's unlikely I'll do many shifts where I can deliver the good news!

I'm a part time worker and I don't see this new regime helping me at all. When I drive buses, I commute between Zones 1 and 6. It's a long old way so I use a mix on trains and buses to get to work and a series of night buses to get home. The new system will prove to be more expensive for me - great.

Definitely does, yes. (My son uses one.) Apart from the fact that it is limited to the obvious group of purchasers only, it is just like any other railcard in its day to day use. (Allowing for the usual slight variations in start times, minimum fares and such like.)

So courtesy of Lib Dems TFL have announced on 11/11 a 110% fare increase for armed services and other railcard users?

I don't think you can claim that, because so far there is no mention of railcard discounts being changed in any of the announcement papers (as linked in John@home's earlier post.).
