Does wrong stock invalidate a ticket?

More specifically is a replacement monthly season travelcard printed on orange stock valid?
Also, it has the ticket office stamp on the back to make up for not being on the right stock, but when I looked closer the stamp date was wrong -the day before the date the ticket was printed.
Is it OK?
(I assume the magnetic strip isn't affected by ink stamps)

Yes, it is valid. And it isn't on the wrong stock if it is a 1 month ticket, as "common stock" (orange stock) is used for monthly tickets at many offices. It is probably a variation of ticket issuing system that determines whether season stock is used by others.

Thanks. The lady did make quite a fuss that it was on the wrong stock which is why she decided to stamp the back of the ticket (I didn't say anything about why is it orange)

Seasons (and Travelcard Seasons) with up to 1 month's validity should be printed on common (orange) stock. Those with validity of 1 month 1 day or longer should be printed on blue/grey season common stock.

The main exceptions to this are some PTE products and Annual tickets issued within the Network Gold Card Area for qualifying journeys, which have dedicated stock.

No NR stations should be using the blue (pre-printed) period Travelcard stock any more, as it's long been superseded by common stock, with the TIS printing the headers and Travelcard logo.

There is a gentleman I see regularly at work at the moment who's season ticket is printed on 16-25 Railcard stock. I have told him to get it exchanged for one printed correctly but he hasn't done yet.

As far as I am aware Railcard stock has to be hand fed regardless of TIS. That is one mighty cock-up.

Is there a ticket office in the country that would actually give that to a customer to use? I'd like to think not, are you sure it's genuine

I have a regular whose 16-25 railcard is printed upside down. He keeps refusing to let me replace it <(. Is there anything to say that a ticket printed upside down isn't valid?

Isn't that a reason for a TIR? I'd certainly recommend it was changed as soon as reasonably possible.

Indeed, all railcard stock and the longer than monthly season stock is hand fed into ticket printers.

Knowing some clerks I've worked with, yes it's very possible.... Unfortunately....

Not that I know of, though it really should be changed, perhaps you should 'recommend' they change it at their next convenience, adding that it only takes a couple of minutes to do, at no cost.

What next, a senior railcard on family and friends stock?

I had to do a double take a fortnight ago when I was presented with a weekly GM Countycard (which is green coloured special stock) which was printed on West Midlands nTrain ticket stock of some sorts, which was similarly coloured. Everything seemed in order, and the passenger geniune. I told him to keep the ticket as somebody would be interested in it, and he said until I had pointed it out he hadn't noticed! The station of issue was somewhere in the GM area!

I have seen SNR railcard on very old Y-P stock before, issued somewhere on Merseyside. Some Merseyrail stations seem to have a lot of very old Y-P stock still being used for 16-25 Railcard.

We all age prematurely here on Merseyside so never get to use it! :D

They're always anxious to catch the next train, regardless of how long it is until it arrives. I figure they prefer it being that way.

I wish we had the means to complete a TIR. I have checked and it seems genuine to me. I can't see why anyone would be stupid enough to fraudulently issue a season ticket on Railcard stock as it's bound to lead to extra scrutiny. I am confused as to why it wasn't reissued immediately when printed, as it must have been clear it wasn't right. It's a more minor thing but I do see quite a lot of season tickets incorrectly issued on Annual Gold Card stock when the seasons aren't Annual Gold Cards. (Child seasons, Priv seasons etc.)

Here's a single on season stock...

Note the sprocket hole and squareness; it's from a TVM, so clearly a whole roll was loaded into the wrong dispenser that day. Which implies that quite a few hundred ordinary tickets were issued like this!

It's something so easily fixed by doing an encode exchange that I wonder why it wasn't done at the time of issue.

The first office I worked at in 2010 had disposed of all their period Travelcard stock before I started there, though they still had TfL Bus Pass stock! Where I am now, half the cupboard is filled with blue Travelcard and grey period stock, of all three variants (normal, replacement and duplicate). I don't think the duplicate stock would be depleted any time in the next 10 years and the replacements aren't used much either - those out in the open are turning yellow with age. I very rarely get asked for period tickets, it's almost always weeklies, monthlies or Annuals. I haven't seen any blue period stock - I expect it will eventually appear when what is available now has run out.

The vast majority of period season tickets I see are used by school children/students and are bought for the length of the term. Rare to see grey stock though, it is mainly blue stock. I imagine it's a few stations which issue the majority of them, mainly all in one big rush of the first day of the new term.

And there are plenty of places issuing these on grey stock - as blue doesn't seem to be readily available for some reason. Always looks off due to the over-printing that takes place.

I really can't understand this one. When I worked in a ticket office we kept all the "hand feed" stock in a draw under the TIS screen, and it was easy to sometimes grab the wrong thing (especially if someone had messed the draw up), but you'd surely check it before feeding it into the printer?

It's a shame you don't have the means to do a TIR, as this would be my first instinct in this case, no matter how genuine it seems as it simply shouldn't have been allowed out of the ticket office in the first place.

I seem to recall having my season ticket issued on the pre-printed stock, overprinted with the same headings. Sadly I probably got rid of it.

I have had a few upside down tickets, including a couple of seven day seasons. I think I always got them from TVMs, but I could be wrong. I never had a problem using them.

If I were to forge a ticket (which I'm certainly not planning to do), I think I would take the trouble to make sure it was the right way up, unless I was trying some cunning reverse-psychology ruse.

Slightly off topic but I remember getting a season ticket with my photo which somehow had my brothers name on it, I didn't even notice for a week. I told the guy in the ticket office and he wrote and signed on another card of ticket stock that it was actually my ticket. Only used it for 3 months but I'm still not convinced it was ever valid.

Still see a few issued on grey stock around our way, mostly issued by Business Travel offices. Pretty sure they're "common stock" format though, thus with no pre-printed headings.

Occasionally see green, blue and Gold Card LU issues as well, as their Ticket Office Machines still use dot matrix printers and hand fed stock for "out-boundary" seasons.

As for the "non-availability" of the newer season stock, that may be linked to the minimum order quantities of same, so stations that don't issue many are still using up older stock first.

Well here it is. I asked the passenger again about it and he said it came via his employer's corporate scheme, which I think is dealt with by South Eastern. Which is also the scheme that printed a load of York / Leeds area season tickets on Gold Card stock.

Slightly embarrassing there, as I believe 6331 is the NLC for Abellio's Business Travel Office! Can't remember where they're based though, but with a 6 prefix it should be the former Eastern Region, whereas Southern/Southeastern would be 5xxx.

I used to be able to look up the NLC codes, but since The Manual became the internal knowledge base I have no access to it at work, so can't look it up. It might well be Abellio, I might have been wrong with South Eastern. I just seem to recall a lot of the Gold Card seasons I saw were in South Eastern ticket wallets, and they were the same employer as this passenger. But that was earlier this year, or possibly last, so it could have changed.

Abellio Business Travel is based in Holborn.

Yup...Generally, orange stock is used for seasons (and Travelcard seasons) of up to 1 month's validity, blue stock for anything over that.
