This afternoon, I chanced to look upon the "search" facility and saw a box to tick with this wording above.

I know that we have some very young website members (young in comparison to my 69 years of age), but I was unaware that they now have their very own "Child sub-forum". Where about is this to be found on the website?

Parent-child relationship is not a rare term in the IT world, quite widely used.

"Child" in this sense means a sub-level. A "child" in relation to one thing can be a "parent" in relation to another.

Well let me put matters clearer. The search forum shows a complete list of forums, but the box that I made reference to is in the under-panel with no connection to these. Perhaps being an age of 69 may explain matters why I did not make the required connection.

I do thank you for your explanation of the term "child" in IT matters, but IT was not my particular forte prior to my retirement as I employed staff with expertise in such matters. I would no doubt have some middle management who would have dealt with such matters, but this term never once occurred in any business meeting that I held with my managerial staff.

That box is linked to the list of forums immediately above.

Of course, you can choose multiple forums by using "Ctrl" (selecting multiple individual forums) or "Shift" (continuous multiples), and that effectively renders the box redundant, but using the box does save you the hassle of having to click multiple times if you wish to search through child forums at the same time.

Just one of those quirks in the design. Some people find them quite handy, whereas others never need to use them at all.
