Hello all,

Apologies if this has been done to death or discussed elsewhere.

My question is: Is it monumentally shortsighted of Chiltern or whomever to essentially sever Platform 4 from the main line, and is it inevitable that growing amounts of traffic will require it to be re-opened in due course and track relaid?

Thanks.

Basically all the bay platforms were closed by BR in 1987 when the snow hill tunnel reopened.
This become congested so chiltern reopened two bay platforms
I am no expert but would there need to be a lot of track remodelling before an extra platform would be any use ?
Full history is here

I think the other two platforms have been pencilled in for services to Tamworth and the Camp Hill line. However this would need two new curves on viaducts building, so won't happen for a while if ever.

I would enjoy services to Tamworth and the Camp Hill Line. Not that they'd be of refular use to me, but in principle...

Just for the sake of clarity, Platforms 1 & 2 are the through platforms to Snow Hill, 3 & 4 are the two south facing bay platforms which are connected to the main line by a single lead junction. Platform 5 has a face but isn't connected. There is room for a fourth bay, which could be platform 6 or a carriage siding.

I'm not entirely sure how platform 4 is severed from the main line. You could be referring to platform 5 but that can be reconnected when traffic demands. I'm guessing here but I'd imagine the reason why platform 5 is dormant at the moment is just a financial one. You might have saved a bit of money by having the pointwork setup to connect platform 5 to the main line now but the extra money you would have to spend on signalling probably outweighs that significantly. As far as I am aware there are issues with the viaduct that the station is on too and stabling units in the space where platform 5 and potential platform 6 would be may require some more strengthening work beneath.

If these were built, would that permit an Open Access operator to run a service from Scotland/Manchester into Moor Street?

Bear in mind that until fairly recently, a steam engine used to sit on the disused line - it wasn't that long (relatively) since it was craned out

It isn't required presently. If it is need in future then it can be put in. Nothing shortsighted, it just comes down to sensible business decisions.

When did that happen? I noticed it was gone one day and wondered how they had got it out. Perhaps by shunting another train to it and connecting it up.

It was lifted out by a crane in the road next to Moor Street Station.

If you'd read the thread you might suspect that wasn't the case. ;)

I remember seeing the loco some years a go whilst travelling to a SVR steam gala. Just out of interest was the loco owned by the Tyseley group? I'm assuming here that its now receiving repairs in order to allow it to run again?

When you look at Bing maps "birds eye" view there is no track into platforms 3 & 4. How long ago were those pictures taken?

It should say on Bing? Google Maps photographs are dated.

P3 & P4 are in use so I assume the OP meant P5.

Summer 2010 at the absolute latest by the looks of those photographs. The platforms have been open for traffic since the Winter 2010 timetable.
