Eugh, I guess the person was drunk but it's pretty early in the day!

London Midland has vowed to give police CCTV images of a 'disgusting' passenger suspected of defecating inside a train carriage as it travelled through the Birmingham area.

The passenger who made the awful discovery said the smell was so bad that it forced the operator to cancel the service from Lichfield Trent Valley to Longbridge.

It plunged commuters into hours of misery as the act of vandalism on the Cross City line caused severe delays.

Passenger Christopher Talbot told the Birmingham Mail he was heading to work on the 7:50am service on Thursday when he found excrement in a newspaper on the floor.

He said: ‘As I sat down I saw a newspaper on the floor. I leaned over and noticed there was something inside it.

‘It looked like poo basically. The smell was going through the carriage. These trains have toilets on.’

The 52-year-old, who works as a cleaner at a school, said there was only one other passenger in the carriage, and he reported the incident to platform staff when he disembarked at Butlers Lane in Four Oaks.
The service terminated at Birmingham New Street so that the carriage that was used as a toilet could be cleaned.

Normal service resumed at about 9:30am.

A Network Rail spokeswoman confirmed to MailOnline Travel that excrement was discovered inside a carriage.

A spokesman for London Midland said the 'act of vandalism' was 'disgusting'.

He added: ‘It was necessary for the train to be cleaned before we could continue to let passengers onto the service.

‘I would like to apologise to our genuine passengers who experienced the disruption.’

London Midland confirmed that CCTV images of the culprit, who fled the train, would be passed onto police for investigation.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman told MailOnline Travel that it has no record of a formal complaint being filed.

A similar incident occurred last month when a British Airways flight was forced to return to London after a foul odour emanated from an overflowing toilet.

That's absolutely disgusting - what's worse is there's actually toilets on the train so there's absolutely no excuse for it at all. It just shows how lazy and inconsiderate some people can be!

I hate to say it but I'm not that shocked - used to (and still does) happen on the Paris suburban network quite often, not that that makes it ok, but it's hardly unheard of.

that's disgusting, but it sounds to me like someone's making a mountain out of a molehill ...

(okay, that one was crap even by my standards, I'll just be off then)

Has anyone seen the CCTV?- why have Midland trains not released it?

No CCTV on most LM 323s.

This happened last year on the Cross City too, someone left a brown deposit on one of the seats opposite the toilet. The toilet wasn't OOU but was presumably occupied. In that instant they didn't even have the grace to add it to the crap in the Metro, just left it on the seat... IIRC they ran the unit with the middle carriage locked out until the end of service on that occasion.

There are many reasons why the Cross City is regarded as being s*** to work, this is just a literal one. ;) :p

Not unknown - regrettably - some animals out there. Once found a packet on a 313 - not a nice experience cleaning that up to keep it in service..

Happened in M&S once (not me I hasten to add). If it can happen in There, it can happen anywhere.

"it plunged passengers into hours of misery of as the act caused hours of delays" - says the article.

Considering there is a ten minute frequency on this route, how were passengers actually delayed for "hours" over a poo sitting on the floor?

What a load of **** haha. The press does like a drama. Hope they're getting proffesional help for their ordeal. Where there's blame...

Well you can hardly blame the press for it, maybe the publicity will help identify the disgusting individual responsible?

Vomit is bad enough but that is just vile!

Did they run a DNA test on it? If not, the investigation is going to be a bit poo-poo.
