Hiya,

I've passed my interview and psych test last week for trainee conductor and i'm very excited. but what actually happens now??? will i sit in a "talent pool" or do you get invited to medical next? i'm a bit worried everyone in my group passed. the email just said northern would be in touch next week but i'm so excited...yet under notice of redundancy too so you can perhaps understand my urge to know if i made medical or not? what happened next after some of you lot passed psych?

there was a few of us and only 2/3 jobs :-/

Well they will probably decide who to offer jobs to and then those people will get offered a medical. The medical IS NOT part of the interview and application process, only those who get a job offer will get a medical.

As to a talent pool depends. They might or that might just be it.

Thanks. If you end up in a talent pool, can you still go for jobs with Virgin etc? I wouldn't have to re sit the assessment would i?

Hi,

It will depend on what station you've applied for as to whether you sit in a talent pool, however this is my experience -

Interview
Assessments
Medical
Result of medical in less than 48hrs
(all the above happened within a month)

I was then called to advise I was successful and given a verbal offer, and advised a welcome pack would be with me soon (it took over 3 weeks for this to arrive). This pack contains your welcome letter, brief job spec, contract and some other paperwork for bank details etc.

I start my training in a couple of weeks so the process for me will have taken nearly 3 months from application to start date.

I wouldn't worry, you've done well to get this far. Good look with the medical and I hope you get a date soon.

The medical is simple, mine took an hour and is nothing to worry about. I can't comment on the medication side of things as I don't know the answer, but the medical entails the following -

Drugs and alcohol test (pee in a cup)
Breathalyser for alcohol
Blood pressure check
Height
Weight (don't know the specifics I was just advised I was in proportion and met the standards)?
Simple eye test for distance
Colour blindness test
Hearing test

When you arrive you fill in a number of forms to disclose what meds you are taking or have taken in the last so many hours. You will also discuss it during the medical.

I got my results in less than 48hrs (you have this wait for the results of the drug test as samples are sent off for testing) but I was also told had passed the rest on the day but the result would still depend on the outcome of the drugs test.

I so have everything crossed that i made it to medical. I have to tell my work on wednesday that i'm taking my redundancy so really hoping this works out.
I have another job lined up but really want this one, gonna be working longer days and have high targets to hit in the other job i've been offered. I wouldnt be surprised if all ten on my psych test passed, everyone seemed very clued up :-/ no news is good news for now....

If you've had a medical, they should have made a provisional job offer - pending you passing it, and your references being okay.

Your own employer sent a lot of people for medicals without job offers 2 years ago :p

Thanks. If you end up in a talent pool, can you still go for jobs with Virgin etc? I wouldn't have to re sit the assessment would i?

I was in a talent pool having passed all tests for one TOC, and successfully got a job with another, using the test results from the former (obviously I still had to do a full interview and everything else). That said, every TOC has their own rules. When I was at Virgin they wouldn't accept scores from any test unless it was done by Virgin themselves.

Good luck mate, I know from past experience its daunting waiting for a reply, but remember, whilst we are anxiously sat by our phones. these people are exremely busy, Im sure you'll be fine, anyone with your enthusiasm cant go far wrong. Just sit tight, and dont rush into handing your notice in, when that time comes, you'll know it ;)

Actually I do mind. A question was asked, I was able to provide an answer to it. I'm not sure why that upsets you so much but if you want to become more than a "wannabe" then (if you don't mind me offering some friendly advice) then maybe think about losing the sensitivity?
