Sitting in standard might be safer than 1st?

On some less busy trains, do any members here sit in standard class when they have a 1st class ticket to avoid muggers? I was thinking muggers target people sitting in 1st so sitting in standard might sometimes be safer?

I've never been in 1st class and feared for my personal safety. There are also usually staff members around in 1st class, which you don't get as much in standard.

I don't think too many muggings occur on trains anyway, stations tend to have a lot of CCTV.

Had a wallet stolen in first.

Siting on the train at platform 1 in the 'old' KX platform 1 which had a public entrance at the North end and before the station was barriered.

Their got on B and walked through getting off at M. My jacket was on the hook behind me and I was concentrating on the laptop. I know the jAcket disappeared before we left as I went to get something out of it.

BTP got someone on another day who asked for my case to be taken into consideration.

Never got the jacket or wallet back.

I now always put it above me so I can be aware if someone is leaning over me.

Doesn't stop me going first.

If I was going to sit in standard class, I'd buy a standard class ticket.

And is crime on trains that much of an issue that anyone really changes their behaviour because of it? The absolute crime rate on railways is very low and I wouldn't think that you would need to take any specific precautions over and above what you would do anywhere else.

And I don't see why FC would be less safe. It could be argued that FC passengers are more lucrative marks, granted, but I think a mugger is going to go for someone they think is a worthwhile risk, and I doubt that they'd be in the FC carriage/area in the first place.

In my experience, you seem to experience an awful lot of things others haven't. I recall a thread where you apparently sat and watched a lady trying to get on a puschair for 15 different trains and couldn't, another time you watched a wheelchair user try and board trains for 30 minutes and you didn't seem to get on one yourself! Wasn't it you who slept at work for two days because the trains weren't running due to storms?

There are countless other examples, so forgive me for being sceptical!

I have known people get items stolen in both First and Standard class by stealth thieves, usually in part due to their own lack of awareness or taking the most basic of precautions in terms of keeping valuables out of sight.

I have never heard of a passenger being robbed/mugged in an overt way on a train.

I'm sure it has happened, but it is rare enough that in ten years I have never come across it or heard of a colleague who has.

I will come across people sitting in Standard class on First Class tickets on purpose because they are with colleagues on Std Class tickets, they couldn't be bothered to walk to First Class (if the train is in reverse usually), or they have bulky luggage and couldn't get it to First Class for whatever reason. "I'm sitting here because I feel safer" is not a reason I have heard...

Use discretion - but then I have 1st class travel pass for leisure.

On a 319 it is not unknown for certain people to misuse the facility for covert drug taking etc (evidence occasionally found) - as it rather "private" ........no CCTV on them assists this unlicensed activity.

Technically if you have a first class ticket it is not valid in standard class, so it depends if the money you have about your person is more than the cost of a standard single for your chosen journey!

Also surely the muggers are doing it wrong, the first class passengers will have less money to steal as they spent it on a first class ticket!

anyway, around my ways, trains with first class have someone serving drinks/checking tickets, whereas there is often no staff in std, so I'd think 1st would actually be safer on the balance of things

In all fairness, I've seen people "accidentally" walk into 1st and get uppity when they get booted out. But there has been a distinct lack of muggings or otherwise nefariousness
