Yesterday a passenger asked GA on Twitter whether their Lowestoft to Stratford tic was valid via Norwich, Cambridge and KX. They were told no. But I think it is valid. NRE offers itineraries that way if you put via Cambridge, and using the new NRE maps again with via Cambridge it gives a map via KX. The via London validity is of course supported by the maltese cross.

One point I would appreciate some help on. Using the ATOC routing guide, Lowestoft has RP Norwich, and in the yellow pages journeys between Norwich and Stratford London Gp has permitted routes London and EA.

What does permitted route London mean here? Does it mean that a ticket is permitted via all routes a Norwich or Stratford to London Terminals is valid? Thanks

Don't worry, it's all in the ticketing guide, para 3 4 7. I will go and do my own homework

After consideration of prices, routeing points etc, it's permitted to take the shortest route between Lowestoft and Norwich, followed by mapped routes between Norwich and London in the yellow pages, transfer by the Underground then mapped routes between London and Stratford. This is an application of the "LONDON" route code, which is explained in the ticketing guide and routeing guide instructions, which you've found :)

It boils down to whether Norwich to London is permitted via Cambridge in the yellow pages. Of which it is.

Greater Anglia should have a go-to person who understands how to determine the permitted routes for their tickets - in this case, someone that doesn't know what they're talking about seems to have provided the response.

I agree with RJ. It's valid.

Lowestoft is associated with Ipswich & Norwich Routeing Points.

Sratford is member of Stratford London Gp

Norwich is an appropriate routeing point for Lowestoft in this case
(Fares check: NRW-SRA SOS £64.00; LWT-SRA SOS £69.70)

Norwich to Stratford London Gp is permitted on map combination "LONDON" as well as map EA

As it's mapped via "LONDON", this means all the permitted routes from Norwich to London plus all the permitted routes from London to Stratford.

Of course, this includes the route via Cambridge.

I travel Norwich regularly and actually much prefer the route via Cambridge. The time penalty isn't huge, King's Cross is a better connected terminal and I actually prefer the rolling stock to the Greater Anglia loco hauled.

Norfolk/Suffolk to London area tickets are valid via Cambridge. Personally I don't understand why someone would choose to go that way, especially not for Stratford.

Far more concerning to me as a guard is that I could run into RJ between Cambridge & Norwich. :o ;)

Well last weekend it meant you could travel the whole way by train - without using a replacement bus!

The GE often has engineering works on Sundays so it's the next best option. I find the interior of the Mk3 stock uninspiring and not especially comfortable, so going via Cambridge is a very viable alternative for me.

I'm most likely to be found on the line going to Norwich on the odd Saturday evening, returning on Sunday morning. When I do use your service, it's usually the same guard - a lady who's always friendly and helpful! You're unlikely see me using any unusual tickets - unless I've travelled the via GEML on the outbound journey, as I have a preferred ticket which undercuts the London Terminals to Norwich SVR :p

Is this tic valid on HS2 KX to Stratford International and on to Stratford on dlr? HS2 plus dlr being the quickest way to make that journey usually. I can't get itineraries for it.

Interestingly however I can get itineraries for Lowestoft to Stratford International via Cambridge, KX and HS2. And the fares Lowestoft to Stratford International are the same as to Stratford.

Probably not on a ticket to Stratford, no.

Stratford Intl - Stratford is a recognised 'interchange' however it's the view of the rail industry that, when determining permitted routes, you cannot start or end the route with an interchange.

For example, a ticket from St Albans Abbey wouldn't have any permitted routes that commence with a walk to St Albans.

Of course, the route code "LONDON" means all the permitted routes from Lowestoft to London, plus London to Stratford Intl.
