Just wondering, as every train I seem to get between Stafford and Liverpool is a God awful 350/2 with 3+2 seating, not appropriate for Liverpool to Birmingham!

Anyway,
Is it possible to pay a first class excess in the normal way with a great escape? Ie the difference between the SDS and FDS?

Sadly, the Liverpool LM trains do have first class advertised in the timetable. :D

Nope, it's a whole new ticket. FDS if bought at the station, potential penalty fare if not. T&Cs say you can't upgrade to first class on board with a Great Escape ticket, but whether this excludes weekend first I don't know.

Buy the first class Great Escape?

It's only worth it if you get a 350/2 though! I didn't know that every single train that went to Liverpool was a /2 I thought they were mostly /1s, they certainly used to be!

I took that to assume you couldn't decide you wanted a first class great escape onboard, not on a journey by journey basis.

Condition 12 on my Great Escape voucher says:

It is not possible to upgrade to a First Class Great Escape ticket on board.

The "normal way"? There is no normal way. It varies by Train Company.

The likes of Trans Pennine Express and East Coast will upgrade the passenger and not apply any penalty. TPE will even do a custom excess to only upgrade you for the applicable part of the journey. EC do ask that Season Ticket holders approach the Guard first though. Anyone else can just take a seat and upgrade when the Guard appears.

But that's certainly not the case on LM, where you must sort it out before you board, and if you just take a seat, you can be issued with a Penalty Fare, if caught by an authorised collector. The likes of FCC would even threaten prosecution in these circumstances.

How does an excess work where there is no first class fare.

Middlesbrough to Newcastle for example. An unlikely first journey, but may be worth it as part of a split.

More realistically Middlesbrough to Wigan where the majority of the journey is TPE.

I got lucky :D

350108+350129 showed up! I'm in the second to last coach, the rear has been empty since BHM and this one has 3 people in who boarded at Stafford, one being a wheelchair user.

The front unit was wedged with normals however:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I'd imagine the guard/ticket office staff would split at Leeds/Manc for Mbr-Wgn, (discounting the combined 1st fares by the fare already paid) or for relatively short haul journeys like Mbr-Ncl, just inform the customer that no 1st class fares are available, or look at different origins/destinations, for example Thirsk-Newcastle.

You call MBR-NCL relatively short distance... Are you aware its pacer ran? :D

Hop down the track to Eaglescliffe, now that's a different story!!
