This looks a very interestign role. i have always wanted to work on the railways but the only options have been a driver, guard or station staff. This looks like a great alternative. Anyone have experience with this job?

Job status: Permanent
Hours of work: 42 (with an hour for lunch)
Grade: D
Salary range: London: £39,288-£47,693 / Bristol: £35,526-£43,931
ORR job reference: RSD/067

This role is open to all candidates

Summary

As the independent safety and economic regulator, we promote safety and value in Britain’s railways. Our vision of success for Britain’s railways is:

• Zero workforce and industry-caused passenger fatalities, with an ever-decreasing overall safety risk;
• Satisfaction levels of passengers and freight customers equivalent to the best in railways and other forms of transport; and
Efficiency equivalent to that achieved by the best comparable railways in the world.

About the role

We are looking for enthusiastic, inquisitive and highly motivated individuals, who want to make a difference to health and safety on the Britain’s railway.

The ORR has offices in London, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, York and Bristol. We are currently recruiting a trainee health and safety inspector to our London or Bristol offices, depending on the suitability of the candidates.

As one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Railways you will regulate health and safety for passengers; the workforce and the public; who use, operate and maintain Britain’s railways. The team you will work with is responsible for ensuring the railway industry meets the requirements of health and safety law and is working towards achieving zero industry caused fatalities. As an inspector you will carry-out planned site visits and investigate accidents and incidents.

You will provide advice to duty holders and as necessary take formal enforcement action. You will also represent ORR to stakeholders in the railway industry including trade unions.

You will be a warranted health and safety inspector, initially at Grade D. You can expect to move to a Grade C railway safety inspector role within 2 years providing you can demonstrate inspector and railway competencies. There will be an intensive training and development programme to help you achieve the necessary inspector and railway competencies.

You will be located in London or Bristol, regulating Network Rail. You will be in a team with other inspectors, working directly to a Principal Inspector (team leader). Initially you will work with others, but as your skills and knowledge develop, you will increasingly work on your own, but always with the support of your team. While you are undergoing training, you will be required to travel and work away from your home region. As an inspector you will be required to travel and work within your team's geographical work area, and there will be a requirement to work some unsocial hours.

Key responsibilities

Your key responsibilities, although not exhaustive, will be to:

Carry out site inspections and investigate accidents and complaints to assess compliance with health and safety legislation and the effectiveness of risk controls.

Identify breaches in health and safety legislation and weaknesses in risk controls.

Provide verbal and written advice to duty holders and stakeholders including trade unions.

Contribute to ORR’s overall assessment of industry performance.

Work collaboratively with your immediate team and colleagues across ORR and share information and intelligence.

This description of the job may be subject to review, and is to provide you with guidelines within which you would work. Other duties appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time.

Don't forget the bit about "investigating accidents" - that will probably be at 3am in the middle of winter with 6inches of snow on the ground - or coming down! I was involved in some serious fire investigations during my Civil Service job which certainly did not stick to normal office hours.

I have recently came across this threat and the vacancy seems interesting, Unfortunately I live in the north of England. Can anyone comment if these vacancies are southern based positions or may there be opportunities for positions nationwide. I understand no one can comment on future vacancies but i am intrigued to learn if there are these types of rolls dotted around the UK.

It's for London or Bristol. I was tempted, but in all honesty I don't think i'm suited to the job.

How often do these jobs come up?

Just doing a vague Google search, there was one listed roughly this time last year.
