I forgot my railcard today so I bought a full price ticket:

No hassle
No rude or aggressive ticket inspector
No penalty fare
No summons
No court appearance
No fine
No criminal record
No problem

I just thought people might like to hear a story like this for a change.

Exactly as it should be. I went through the exact same process last month!

As did I! I was travelling from Darlington to York and forgot my railcard so bought an undiscounted ticket and everything was fine. I was so shocked that I almost forgot where I live so if I had had an issue I would probably have given the inspector the wrong address!!

I should also mention that I got to the station in plenty of time to buy a ticket from the TVM which provided useful information on the available tickets so I could choose the appropriate one.

Ah, you see this is where our stories diverge. I tried the TVM at Crewe but (predictably) it only offered a limited range of tickets and wouldn't sell the one I required (or at least it wasn't obvious). I had some time so I queued up at the ticket office instead, who were most helpful.

You mean you didn't board without a valid ticket, and you didn't wait for the "ticket man inspector" to find you? And you didn't accidentally short fare when forgetting which station you'd spent ten minutes waiting at?!
