I've been caught up in the Kings Cross disruption this morning on my journey from Stevenage to Digby & Sowton. Great Northern have put in place ticket acceptance from Cambridge with Greater Anglia which is nothing really as I believe all GN tickets from Cambridge are routed Any Permitted which would allow travel into Liverpool Street anyway.

No ticket acceptance has been put in place at St Albans, Luton or Bedford to assist passengers from other stations which is not very good from Great Northern so I'm currently heavily delayed.

It got me thinking though. Say ticket acceptance was put in place at Luton and I'd driven there and made my journey from there. Later on the disruption gets resolved and ticket acceptance at Luton is removed. I need to return to Luton as that's where my car is.

Would I be allowed to travel back to Luton without 'hassle' or without having to buy an additional ticket?

No, if ticket acceptance is no longer in place you would need a new ticket.

No service to St Pancras due to over running engineering works

I thought that might be the case but it doesn't seem right, particularly if a passengers driven to an alternative station at their own expense.

Ouch! Good job I stayed where I was and didn't head across to a Thameslink station.

I have seen some operators tweet, or send internal messages, saying customers can return to where they came from in the morning, especially in some cases where they have been allowed to use other stations and park in their car parks etc!

Quite rare though!

Say I live mid way between Stevenage and Luton. GN say there's disruption and tickets from Stevenage are being passed at Luton. It's quite reasonable for me to drive to Luton and take the train from there.

Later the same day I make my return journey. Bit unreasonable to have to pay for a single from St Pancras to Luton when all I've done is what the TOC said I could do.

This must be a reasonably frequent occurrence so I'm surprised there's not some guidelines in place, at least internally.

I don't know how often that allowance is made there these days, up in this neck of the woods it is almost unheard of to have official acceptance on another route, and when I worked for Thameslink (pre-FCC), I recall use to other destinations was not that common, with alternative routes being to places like St Albans, via Watford, and Bedford, via Bletchley on Silverlink services, or Mill Hill, Cricklewood, etc, via LUL and local bus services.

Ticket acceptance between GN and Thameslink is quite common now if there is disruption on one of the lines - I guess it helps that they're both part of the same franchise.

In the past when I've driven to Hatfield due to disruption at St Albans, I've never had a problem going back that way to collect my car. It might not be advertised but staff at both ends have let me through without question. I guess you should really get your ticket endorsed to do this.
