Hello all I'm just looking for a rough idea of how much if anything I'll need to bring with me. I've splashed out to do the return journey from London to Penzance on the 1006 outward and the 1559 return in First Class. I've heard the Pullman Dining option is very good onboard the 1006, does anyone know what the price is? What if anything is likely to be complimentary or available for purchase between Plymouth (is that where the Pullman service is packed up>) and Penzance and on the return journey? If a trolley isn't available, can First Class ticket holders collect refreshments from the buffet? Also does anyone have a recommendation for somewhere to grab food should it be needed in the hour at Penzance? My connecting trains do involve an earlyish start and a very late finish, but the latter shouldn't matter too much as I should have a little bit of time for something to eat once back in London. Thanks.

The 1006 will be serving 'Brunch' the menu for which can be found here. It's expensive but I'm told absolutely excellent and worth the money.

Otherwise, in first class, there will be a trolley between London and Plymouth offering hot and cold drinks (no alcohol) and biscuits. Between Plymouth and Penzance the same is available but you'll have to go to the buffet to collect (make sure you make it clear when you order that you're a first class passenger otherwise they might try to charge you).

When the Pullman isn't running the only other food available will be the usual buffet menu (see here).

Done the Pullman in the other direction and at a guess heading out of London it's probably packed up just before Plymouth, with nothing for a short while, then a new catering crew at Plymouth take over I'm guessing. Yes you can collect stuff from the buffet if there is no trolley. Go round the one-way system straight ahead (turn slightly to the right outside the station) for a main street - a couple of minutes walk down this street is supermarkets, a local bakery for a nice pasty etc, if that's what you're after, although there is a cafe I believe just outside to the left.

Beyond Plymouth the only catering is the buffet and there is no at seat service at all in first class between Plymouth and Penzance. Pullman on the 1006 closes after Reading (though obviously they'll still be serving but there is no further sitting after Reading).

OK thanks all. £18 is not cheap.... but the menu does look delicious... Although more difficult to justify for a vegetarian such as me!

If you choose not to take the Pullman service, are you still offered a drink and a snack between London and Plymouth? Also, I think Ainsworth and I might have discussed this recently (although I can't remember if it might have been someone else!), if you take your First Class ticket to the buffet when there is no trolley service, do you only get one serving, or can you ask again as is reasonable? Plymouth to Penzance does take a while, after all! Obviously the host might get a bit annoyed if you are there every 5 minutes!

I believe that if you aren't partaking of the Pullman then the usual first class offer applies and I believe it's at seat service as usual between London and Plymouth (otherwise I guess go to the buffet).

Yeah I think I was in the group that were discussing going to the buffet. My opinion is that as long as you're not taking the proverbial (i.e. going up every five minutes) then repeated visits should be fine.

There's the usual trolley service in first class, offering drinks and snacks (biscuits, crisps and nuts). They tend to be pretty good at coming through. Every time I've been down to Truro they've come through about every 30 minutes or so.

Catering crews change either at Exeter or Plymouth, and there is no advertised at-seat service after there. The buffet counter people are happy to serve you more than once, so long as you're not taking the mickey (although you might get a bit of teasing). There is sometimes an at-seat service in Cornwall (there was last time I went to Truro) but I'm guessing that depends on staffing.
