Reported 205L Reading after falling down at Burnham due Main Reservoir Fault. Class 57 (presume a Sleeper Loco) sent from OOC to assist. Intention said to remove Rear Power Car and forward as 1+8 to Bristol Parkway. Will update when outcome can be confirmed.

Does anyone know what was going on with the HST going west out of slough this evening at around 18:00 this evening. When my train went past it had been uncoupled at one of the coaches and several people in orange suits were milling around it ? Was causing knock on delays as trains were being diverted onto the slow line.

I saw 57306 trundling along on its own the slow line as well about the same time so not sure if that was on its way to assist.

Main Reservoir fault in the rear power car meant that the set could not be moved.

Set moved forward as an 1+8 and then cancelled at Reading. Class 57 sent to rescue errant power car

EDIT: It now appears the set has been given RA (Right Away) to Bristol Parkway

Lots of delays this evening. The Valley Lines in and around Cardiff were severely delayed this evening, my journey in particular taking over an hour when it's usually 25 minutes.

I noticed 43035+43022 worked 1B48 1515 Paddington to Cardiff, and then 1Z55 1755 Cardiff to Swansea non-stop!

Terminated Bristol Parkway 233 L and ECS to PM Depot. Seen report that actually ran as 1+7 and max 100 mph. I don't understand the technicalities myself but something to do with reduced braking efficiency.

So that 3+ hours it was probably sitting around Slough/Burnham for waiting to have the rear power car uncoupled, feel sorry for those passengers.

Would the train have come to a gradual stop as the air leaked out or would the brakes have snapped on the same as an emergency stop?

Not sure myself, just looked up to see how late it was on RTT for those interested :D

Max 100mph due to only 1 E70 brake controller (no rear power car, means no E70). Normally breaking is supplied from both front and rear powercars. With just one E70, it takes longer for the air to travel down the length of the set, hence the speed restriction.

Thanks for explaining this.

It would have been the emergency brake coming in. I think it's the low main res governor that dumps the brake pipe.

Yeah, the working HST and carriages was uncoupled leaving one carriage behind. Thats what I saw when I went by.

I am reminded of Thomas the Tank engine when the fat controller tells the locos off and says "You used to be a really useful engine"

The Valley Lines were horrendous. It's no real surprise that a facebook group has been set up called Arriva Trains Fails, which has just reached 2000 members.

Interestingly the 1755 Cardiff to Swansea was a one off to account for the lack of 1648 service and the delayed 1750, so well done to FGW for responding to it. Oh how I wish that existed everyday! As it was I got stuck in the Valley Lines delays, missed my connection (the delayed 1750 which left just as I arrived at CDF) and ended up with a 2hr 40min commute door to door.

BTW, hi everyone.

That train also ran back non-stop from Swansea to Cardiff as the delayed 1828 to Paddington to make up time but then got stuck near Bristol Parkway and between Didcot and Swindon and finally arrived 40 late so a nice try by fGW but as is so often the case, unfortunately to no avail.

I passed this about 18.25 (on the 18.00 off Padd).
There was the rear loco left and one carriage, and the rescue loco was just drawing up to it. Interestingly a light loco, and I'm pretty sure it was the one I saw later drawing towards the failure, had passed through Acton Main Line station around 17.25 (on the Down Relief) so how it took an hour to get to Slough and draw up to the train I have no idea!

Didn't the FGW HST vehicles lose their end doors when they were refurbished. I wonder how the 'open' end of the train was sealed for 100mph running? Perhaps this is why the last carriage was also left behind.

Indeed - That's just what I was wondering as well. Last coach obviously locked out of use then with a barrier or staff member preventing anyone from going through the sliding door to the coach / vestibule presumably?

ouch! that will be an expensive failure. Isn't it £200 per minute for the delay payments?

Given that most of the trains delayed are FGW I shouldn't have thought it matters much. In any case the delay repayments from NR on this section this week must have covered it comfortably.
