At Kings Cross St Pancras tube station there are notices advising that those using Oyster who are transferring to/from the Northern line and other lines and now need to pass through the ticket gates to do this will not be charged a second fare by doing so.

What about those using national rail tickets with tube validity who need to do this. Will their tickets be accepted by the second set of ticket gates?

Generally speaking all tickets except Travelcards will be rejected by the second set of gates when interchanging and should be presented to staff for a visual inspection. All gates are currently set to return tickets as well for this reason.

As an aside, it is possible to interchange between all lines without having to go through a second set of gates whilst the escalators are being refurbished, however I'm not going to publicise this here as the station can get very congested and the routes may not be available at all times!

As long as you tap in an tap out your Oyster will be fine. Have needed to do the Northern / Circle run many times recently. You have a period of time to get between the two but you could get a coffee in that time, it isn't challenging. I would recommend trying to walk around the station to stay correct side of the barrier the long walks involved are simply not worth it.

Fifteen minutes between tapping in and out, to be precise. The same also applies to CPCs.

However the OP's question was in regards to paper tickets, which I have answered above.

And as for long walks around KXX? Try working there.

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
Going a little off topic, is i not rather bad planning to A, refurb escalaters at the cross whilst similar work is happening at Euston and B, given the years of disruption at this station not so long ago isnt it bad service to have more now?

There is no need to go through two sets of gates when transferring to/from the Northern line, despite what the signs say.

From the tube booking hall go down the Piccadilly escalator and there is a 'secret' passageway to the Northern line on the left hand side, just after the 1st platform entrance to the Piccadilly line.

Far quicker than going via the Northern ticket hall.

A - Not really, because no-one affected by the works at Euston would have cause to use Kings +.

B - Before the works at the station, there was only one bank of escalators to the Northern line from street level, so to do them all at once would have meant the Northern line would have to non-stop. The works at Kings + St Pancras finished several years ago.

That passageway is now frequently closed off due to overcrowding because more people have become wise to it.

The work at Euston is currently on the northbound Victoria/Northern Bank Branch escalators, so shouldn't affect Kings Cross much- the signs recommend Warren Street (which is closer to Euston than Kings Cross) as the alternative station for a reason. I'm assuming they're waiting for the Kings Cross work to end before finishing the southbound escalator work.

The work on these escalators couldn't be done until the new station was fully completed, and these escalators are the old ones not the new ones. The fact there is two access points is allowing TfL to do all the work in one go, which is only a good thing.

Ah yes, but by working there, you know all of the shortcuts... including the 'other' method of accessing the Northern Line from the Tube Ticket hall... ;)

I believe that passageway is now physically boarded off whilst the escalator work takes place.

Oh no, southbound Northern/Vic ?
More queuing and stairs? :(

Yep, I believe they've completed one southbound and one northbound escalator, and are currently working on the second northbound escalator. One southbound escalator to go I think.

Not unless it's been blocked off since last Saturday, as I last used it then. It is however occasionally blocked by staff in one direction.

I suspect they couldn't block off the passage completely due to fire regulations.

There's a few different passageways on the 'tube' side of the station so the confusion is understood.

Between the Piccadilly line and the Northern line there is "P" alley which remains accessible during the escalator works, and a convenient shortcut to avoid going via the North Ticket Hall. However, as mentioned by a few posters, this passageway does have a one-way system put in place from time to time to ease congestion and overcrowding.

Between the Victoria line and the Northern line escalators there is the 'dog leg' - this is currently closed as part of the escalator refurbishment works. Access to the Northern line escalators from the Piccadilly line side is also closed off, as one would expect. This does mean a longer interchange between the Picc and the Vic at the moment - customers must either go to ticket hall level on the tube side or to hub level and along the hub-link passageway on the "new" (North) side of the station.

There are also a few disused passageways to/from the Northern and the Picc, and staff access to the Northern via back of house areas, for those interested.

I am referring to the 'dog leg' as opposed to 'pee alley', though going back a few quotes I can see it was the latter that was initially mentioned, hence the confusion.
