Look at BRFares for Selby to Cambridge, I notice that one of the fares available is for £10,000! http://www.brfares.com/#!fares?orig=SBY&dest=CBG -see the 1st class single fares section.

Doubtless it's an error/there for technical reasons, but I am left curious what the fare is really for. It's marked 'HT DIV RTE ONLY', which presumably refers to some form of Hull Trains diversion, but does anyone know what it actually is for?

I'm sure it's no more an error than the 10p Edinburgh to London first class return fares - it's in there for a reason, but they never intend to actually sell it.

There are lots of fares in the database priced at something like 9999.99, it is just a hack to mean "not for sale".

Presumably it was originally created for days when Hull Trains were diverted via Cambridge due to engineering work.

But it still leaves the question of just what it is that it is seeking to prevent a sale of?

A Hull trains only first single from Selby to Cambridge which can only be used if they're diverted via Cambridge and also calling there.

Amazon does this a lot, having things priced at £999,999 - and every now and then it makes the Daily Mail as being outrageous when it's clearly deliberate to stop something showing on searches, and certainly to stop anyone buying.

Goodness knows what happens if someone did try though! If I was out of stock and put up the price to £999,999, I might try to source something a bit quicker if someone actually ordered!!

If I recall correctly though, TISes must not offer tickets of £9999.99 for sale; but must offer fares of £10000.00 because that's not a magic number.

They are used for the East Coast rewards tickets. 10p is printed on the ticket but never charged.

There was a period during engineering that Hull Trains were terminating at Cambridge. During more normal engineering situations trains diverted via Cambridge pass through non-stop.

There are all sorts of these tickets dotted within the systems. £999.99 and 00.1p are both common ones on Avantix. Never really understood why they are listed on Avantix, same goes for Advances which for some reason are listed on Avantix (for some routes).

Is odd its a round number though.

I saw a 10p ticket yesterday at King's Cross. It was left in the exit gate (which was open - they all were) and someone hadn't collected it.

It appears to be blocked from sale a different way:

From Until Not available on:
Fri 2 Jan 2015 Sat 16 May 2015 Every Day
But what ticket routing availability, in the event of HT being diverted via Cambridge, is it seeking to prevent?

BR Fares now shows fares that have been "disabled" in this way as greyed out. Hopefully that will alert people that something is not right with the fare and that they should take a closer look - in particular this goes for the Virgin SVH Off-Pea Single fares too.

Yes indeed and there was a slight bug in BR Fares in this regard, which I've just fixed. The fare is actually in the database at £9999.99 but was being rounded to £10,000.00 for display (fares as sold are always multiples of 5p), and as a result the check for fares with a 99p component wasn't catching it. It's now relegated to the "Other" section following Advance Fares, in addition to being greyed out.

What I find incredulous is that, excluding season tickets, there are 49 different valid ticket options for that one journey. Mind boggling, and I thought things had now been "simplified".

Simplification didn't actually decrease the number of tickets available - it just ensured that they all have the same name.

To be fair, counting all tiers of advance of a given class as one option (as you're not given a choice as to the price of your AP), there are a mere 24 :P

Pfft...That's a miniscule number compared to some routes! Try Birmingham - London. Excluding things like "Inclusive Tour" tickets and Weekend First type upgrades, there are no fewer than 126 ticket options!
