Hi all,

I am looking to book a journey from London to Totnes at the beginning of July, leaving from work on Thursday 2nd to catch the 14.06 from PAD, and returning Monday morning on the 9.23 (not wedded to these times, but that seems to give the best price). FGW's website gives me a super-off peak for £89, which I'm happy with. (no railcards, BTW.)

My question is that I will be working in London both those days, before and after travelling, having come in from Polegate Station. A separate ticket for PLG-LBG would normally cost about £55-odd for any anytime return.

Is it possible and cheaper to get a combined PLG-TOT ticket that will allow me to travel from Polegate - LBG in the morning peak, break my journey in London, and then catch the 14.06 to TOT? Similarly on the return - break my journey in London and then return from LBG in the evening peak?

I can get the FGW website to show me a super-off peak return (return within one month) for £100, but that only shows routes via Gatwick-Reading, despite my putting LBG into the "via" section or playing with the via Slough/any Permitted Route options. Am I just asking too much here?

Many thanks

Drew

I don't know why it's only showing you the route via Gatwick-Reading, but it's certainly valid via London.

Here is the Super Off Peak Return fare you require:
http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=PLG&dest=TOT&rte=700&tkt=SSR

For travel from Paddington it's valid on trains timed to depart "between 1010 and 1501, and from 1901" so the 1406 is absolutely fine.

On the return portion, it's valid on any train departing at or after 0915 from Totnes.

There is, of course, no restriction whatsover between Polegate and London due to the 'Network Area rule'

Super Off-Peak tickets issued
for journeys commencing within
the Network Area to
destinations outside the
Network Area with travel via
London are valid by any train
to London to connect with
trains from London

As an aside, splitting the Polegate - London journey at Gatwick makes it a lot cheaper.

Many thanks both for your advice; it is much appreciated.

I did finally manage to get the FGW webtis to give me routes via LBG - problem between keyboard & chair, as always- but if I want to leave Polegate before 8.20am on the outwards, it insists that I must buy an off-peak @ a cost of £126. Perhaps that's because earlier trains from PLG gets me into London so early they don't count as a connection for the first super off-peak train out of Paddington (the 11.06).

Anyway - still much cheaper than separate tickets, so many thanks for the advice & reassurance. Now I've got a baseline, I'll look into splits!

Cheers

Atos WebTIS is rubbish for stuff like this.

Go on trainsplit.com and search for:
From: Polegate
To: Totnes
ADVANCED OPTIONS
Via: PAD
Min change time (mins): 110
This will give you an itinerary for the 0822 from Polegate, and the 1406 from Paddington. This can be shown to anyone who disbelieves that it's a valid itinerary.

You don't have to do that but it can provide some reassurance given that, sadly some Southern gateline staff are badly trained by the Company (it's not the fault of the staff) and mistakenly think that all (Super) Off Peak tickets are not valid until some time like 0930.

I'll look into splits!
It will be more expensive to split.
