You might be allowed on if you ask nicely, but the seated coaches are reservations compulsory and you wouldn't be able to get a reservation issued from Crewe to London.

Not advisable unless you have a ticket from the previous station where boarding was allowed, as they are entitled to charge you from there. Please be aware that set-down only trains may leave early.

So if i had a ticket from Inverkeithing to Euston and got on at Edinburgh it would be hard for them to stop me because i have a valid ticket for that train just got on a stop later :D

Technically, since it's not a booked stop, they probably would take a dim view to it.

I assume this is to do a certain locomotive :)

Would suggest you need the appropriate ticket to Euston plus space available on the train and a guard who will let you on if you ask - be prepared to be disappointed though.

What happened if you got on a train and got RPI'd with a ticket for a pick up only station?

It would depend largely on the goodwill (or not) of said RPI. I think one would have a stronger case with a season than a normal ticket, but either way I don't think the NRCoC makes a distinction.

RPI on a sleeper?

But if you look at some of the routes, such as Edinburgh - Carlisle, the sleeper franchise will get no cash so may not be too keen (unless you drink in the bar ;) )

North of Edinburgh, it is a pity that dwell times don't allow it to be used by passengers wanting a late service from Inverness - Edinburgh for example.

I remember the good old days of boarding trains at unadvertised stops and no-one bothered

With the sleeper, are the doors released at Edinburgh? Given it's not an advertised stop there's no need for them to be.

Yes, it gives passengers from the Fort William portion a chance to walk to the Aberdeen portion if they are seated passengers.

Aye, they go silently from bed to bed at 3am checking everyone's wallets for a valid ticket ;)

When I last got the sleeper a few years back, only one door on the whole train was opened, possibly to enforce the pickup/set down only. It may have changed since then.

To be honest it could have just being the lounge car doors when I did it. They were restocking at the same time. (Not much just some more drink) never moved to see if the whole train opened. Likewise at Falkirk G. I always use the door the host opens. Never paid any attention to if the rest of the train is unlocked. Will do next time.
