Are any more up-to-date track diagrams available for purchase than the Track Atlas (date?) / Quail 2006?

If you're looking for the whole country, then Quail second edition is correct to the end of 2012 for a general overview. Not sure off-hand about the dates of the individual Quails for the full detail.

In the Trackmaps (formerly Quail) 5-volume Railway Track Diagrams series, the third edition of volume 4, covering the Midlands, NW and north Wales (the former LMR), came out over a year ago. It says it is up to date to August 2013.

It shows the Metrolink airport line and phases 1 and 2 of the north-west electrification (Liverpool to Manchester and Wigan) as completed, and phases 3-5 (Manchester to Preston, Blackpool and Stalybridge) by means of a tinted strip between the tracks.

Among things it doesn't show are the 3rd and 4th tracks at Huyton/Roby and the remodelled FR/WHR Porthmadog station.

Quail have been quiet since the publication of the latest Midland book in the late summer of 2013, though I believe for good reason. The Eastern one is the next one due for an update and reprint, though I have no idea when that would be: I suspect a third edition of the TrackAtlas will probably come to a fruition before another Quail does. As Ploughman says above there are the relevant SAs available online, the only problem with this is that it can take a very long time to find what you are looking for (particularly the actual track diagrams, for which everyone's savior Ctrl+F doesn't work), and for the layperson perhaps goes into too much detail: Quail I find strikes the right balance of presentation and information.

I did some checking and every quail region book has a differant date on it so the combinied book must be a mixture of dates. Still might get it though.

I don't believe it is: the combined TrackAtlas is rather different to the traditional Quails and certainly the most recent edition (ed.2 I think) is up to date for all the regions concerned. The 'Atlas is produced by superimposing onto a geographic map so I don't think they could even use their Quail diagrams with that style of creation. The Atlas contains a lot less detail than the Quails.

The website has a page for each volume showing the date of the current version. The edition numbers are not aligned, for example the 5th (and current) edition of the Scotland volume is older than the third (and current) edition of the ex-LMR volume.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

The May issue of Modern Railways includes

1) on page 45, an advert for the forthcoming 4th edition of the London Railway Atlas by Joe Brown, published by Ian Allan;

2) stapled into the centre of the magazine, a rail map of central London that opens out to A0 size and is extracted from the said atlas.

TrackMaps are currently developing a subscription online service with electronic editions of their various TM books. Don't expect anything in a hurry though! :lol:
