Microsoft Publisher

Hi all,

I am looking to purchase Publisher 2010, and well, after googling it its an absolute mine field!

So I'm looking for some help on where to get it from at the best price.

I've found it on Amazon for £142. But why would it be this much when the newest version is less than £100? Surely I can get it cheaper than £142.

Really I wouldn't mind upgrading to Office 2010. But I'm struggling to find a version with Publisher that isn't ridiculously priced. I did find a site that had a version with Word, Power Point, Excel and Publisher for less than £100. But that site doesn't seem to be working.

Why don't I go for Office 2013? Well I've used it and I really don't like it. I don't like the way it looks and I just don't get on with it.

Any help is very much appreciated!

You'll struggle getting 2010 legally aside from a Volume Licence that offers a legal downgrade right, I suspect

You should be able to get Publisher on its own, but as part of the suites it does only come on a limited number of the packages. Off hand I can't remember which ones as I only deal with Professional which does come with it

The thing to watch is legality - the thing you're really paying for is the key to unlock the software - if there's anything dodgy about it you'd be wasting your money

Once you get past the new style file menu, 2010 and 2013 are pretty much identical.

You'll struggle to get a legit copy of publisher 2010 from anywhere. Microsoft are very keen to have old software RRVd when they release new stuff so most business simply won't have it anymore.

I'm not sure if it'll suit your needs as its a bit basic, but you might want to try the free alternative called Scribus

I didn't like office 2013 to start with, but it's grown on me.

Regarding getting a cheap copy of Office, you might try at your work - I got a copy of Office 2013 for under £10 as part of the Microsoft Home Use Program. Ask your IT department.

Do you really need publisher? Word and online tools can do pretty good stuff.

I've switched to using office365 (although that doesn't get you past the aversion to 2013) which is the monthly subscription thing - it's feels more efficient as we can install on all the family machines which are combination of windows and mac, and version changes are all bundled in.

My pet hates of Office 2013 are the installer as you cannot custom install desired components, just everything (unless you are a VL customer, in which case you get ProPlus and it is OK) and the fact that all the menus SHOUT AT YOU! Quite why MS felt the need to not use proper case I have no idea. The other functionality of 2013 is fine though, and although coming from 2003 was a big change at first, I do like the ribbons of the newer versions

I do need publisher as I have some work related stuff that was created in Publisher - I have no other way to open them!
Not a bad idea for me to try our IT department, but our computers at work are using office 2010 as standard. So I doubt they will have a copy to part with.

So far I have found this on Amazon. Perfect, but why is it so pricey for an out of date program? The current version is much cheaper, bizarrely.

Your IT department won't just have one to "give away" - if they are part of the relevant programme, they may be able to sell a discounted copy to you (it depends on how big your company is and what arrangements they have in place - I know we don't have any such arrangements where I am)

It is a PKC (Product Key Card) only - the software itself is available as a download. This has become common on Office 2013 whereas Publisher 2010 linked above probably includes media

Wouldn't like to say when it comes to eBay - with a reputable seller you may be OK, but is isn't something I have experience of.

One last thought - you say it is something you need to open for work? If it is work related, maybe you should be asking your employer to borrow a laptop or such to do the work on (I know our lot would be mithering me to borrow a laptop to take home, anyway!)

Thanks for your help chaps.

I was going to go for the one of Amazon I pointed out. But then my sister came to the rescue and it turns out she has publisher on her work laptop and said I can use it. That's saved me a whole heap of cash, I can put that towards some Hornby HSTs now!
