Surely this must be a typo I never knew voyagers were cleared to run down to the airport.

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/currentAndFuture.aspx

CrossCountry An hourly service will run to / from Manchester Airport not calling at Wolverhampton and Stafford, journey times will be extended by up to 30 minutes. Buses will run between between Wolverhampton, Stafford and Stoke-on Trent.

Date of this is 02/05/15.

They're definitely cleared via Styal but I'm not sure about Airport station itself.

As for the NRE text listed, it is a typo: they're running into Piccadilly, via Nuneaton.

(e.g. http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P30381/2015/05/02/advanced)

So it seems like they will have to reverse twice once in New street and once in Nuneaton, but would it not just be better to use the line from Coventry to Nuneaton line save having to clog up space at New Street.

Considering New St is probably the most important station on the route, no....

If one is that fussy about reversing at New Street then approaching trains to / from Coventry could be sent via Aston, Perry Barr Jns and Soho Jns and enter New Street from the Wolverhampton end.

Considering the dwell times XC tend to have at New St, reversing is neither here nor there.

True, although whether trains should be reversing at New Street is another matter. I wouldn't have said that New Street is really well used in capacity terms with trains reversing there.

New Street is truly a weird case. So many trains terminate there and it only has the one bay platform which is too short to handle the larger trains that serve it and is arguably facing the wrong way.

It is countered by the fact the station is effectively split in two with the a and b ends. It isn't an ideal situation by any means to treat it as a terminal but it does work.
