Will Northern pay for my taxi?

I have a feeling the answer will be a firm 'no' but just thought I would get some opinions here.

Caught the 22:33 Bradford to Leeds service intending to then connect with the 23:15 189 bus at Leeds to Castleford.

This usually takes 20 minutes so is in Leeds for 22:55 or so and I'm out of the station by 23:00 so plenty of time to make the bus.

Anyway we leave Bradford a few minutes late, get held outside Leeds for a bit, depart Leeds 4 minutes late at which point I decide there is nowhere near enough time to exit the station and make it to the bus station so I stay on to Garforth and get a taxi from there (£12 vs £25 odd from Leeds!)

Has anyone had any luck getting anything back from Northern in such circumstances (Bearing in mind this was also the last option for getting back to Castleford of the evening)

NO.
You had a rail ticket from Bradford to Leeds, not to Castleford, so even though you were slightly late into Leeds they had completed their "contract" with you.

Sorry forgot to mention I was travelling on my Z1-3 West Yorkshire annual Metrocard so I didn't have a rail ticket to any particular destination as such

You've got two hopes, and one of them is Bob.

The railway's obligation to you ends (at best) at the final destination you are ticketed to on railway services.

Your feeling is almost certainly correct. If Castleford was a rail destination then you would have a case, but Northern got you to Leeds with less than 30 minutes delay. Out of curiosity, why didn't you get a taxi from Leeds railway station to the bus station - you had about 12 minutes for a 4 minute drive.

The last advertised connection (for which you would be covered) by the railway industry departs Bradford Interchange 2144.

Thanks, thought that would be the case just thought it was worth asking.

Luckily it was the York train really so I could take advantage of the Garforth stop off meaning the taxi only came to £10.90! (I would imagine a taxi from Leeds station to the bus station would have cost £3 - £4 and good luck with the queue on a Saturday evening!)

Fair enough. I'm not familiar with Leeds so don't know what the taxi supply is like.

I don't quite understand how 15 minutes is plenty, but 11 minutes isn't worth trying.

Playing it safe I assume. The OP was on the last train to Garforth and if they missed the bus then they would have had a very large taxi fare as they would have had to get a taxi from Leeds. By staying on they had a lower taxi fare even though they may have made the bus.

11 mins is the Google Maps waking time from entrance to entrance.

So, depending on platform & bus stand, it might not be too much more than that, but it could be another 4-5mins (e.g. platform 17 to whatever bus stand is at the far end)

However if you're fit enough it should be straightforward to speed up a bit and do it from platform to stand in 11 mins. I know I could, but not everyone can! (might also depend on how many drinks you've had etc... ;))

As for going from plenty of time to not worth trying, I am sure he would have tried it, and he may well have made it, if it wasn't for the opportunity to cut his losses by going to Garforth instead.

I would have tried it but not from Platform 9 or whatever we pulled up at (Usually the Northern Rail York trains stop so far out of Ledds station you might as well be in York! )

It's about a 10 minute walk from exiting the barriers to entering the bus station, as I ventured there from the station Wetherspoons this evening (Hic!)

I never actually used to be able to rely on the 22:33 in the first place, it's only quite recently that Arriva changed the bus departure from 23:10 to 23:15. Makes a huge difference on quite a lot of rail arrivals to be honest!

Castleford is a rail destination though: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castleford_railway_station

Stand 25 I believe.

Of course it is.

I think what he meant was "If the OP had a rail ticket to Castleford (and a valid itinerary there), ..."
Indeed, that is what I meant - "If Castleford was your rail destination..."

And from the OP's thread, it would have been (and his ticket was indeed valid to take him there) were there a late-enough train.
