Glossop station 1980s rebuild

I've been looking at some photos of Glossop station and it appears that in the 70s and early 80s, as you entered the station the platforms were on the left (see link below).

However now the trains come in with the platform on the right as you can see below.

I don't understand why they rebuilt the station with the platform on the other side. If they were looking to refurbish it surely it would have been cheaper to simply rebuild the buildings rather than knock down the old shelter, rip up the tracks and re-lay them on the other side (since it appears that although the platform on the other side did still exist it couldn't be accessed due to the large forest growing on the platform.)

Can anyone throw any light on why it was rebuilt in this much more expensive fashion when BR were surely looking to save every penny?

The station site was originally much larger, with goods sheds etc. to the right of the old picture. There is a picture of it on p74 of E.M.Johnson's book about the Woodhead route.

I suspect what happened is that most of the site was sold for redevelopment, just keeping a narrow area for the reduced station.

The new station is the forested area to the left in the older picture.

My 1st edition Quail (from 1988) shows the present configuration.

I was under the impression that the "new" platform was actually a disused platform face that had been brought into use (which ended further up the line than the other platform). Just allowed the land to be reused.

Thanks for the info, please can you link the Quail book on Amazon you're referring to as I can't find it?

I suppose once they sold off the other parts of the site they were still in profit about relaying the track and rebuilding the station. To me it would have made more sense to keep the old track layout though.

That's great thanks. I've found another amazing site for looking at old railway lines (and WW1 trenches if that takes your fancy).

You can select how old a map you want to look at and see where all the railways used to be. I did use this to check Glossop but it didn't show me unfortunately. However it's been fantastic to look at other old lines.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I have looked at Glossop station using both the map you've suggested but I couldn't work out which of the lines shown was the one still in use in the 70s.

The top line is the one still used today as can be seen using the overlay function but it could be either the main line or the line below that which was used.

Though you maybe already aware the old part the station the now the co-op.
I live in Hadfield and thus generally have to shunt up and down from Glossop before heading to Manchester. The painfully slow (10mph) Dinting triangle junction makes it seem like an eternity.
Hadfield is also now a single platform station but the old platform is just greenery now and generally populated by squirrels.

I don't travel that bit much as I commute from Broadbottom to Piccadilly every day. However the few times I've been through Hadfield were sad seeing the ruins.

I realised about the Co-Op but it just seemed weird with the old platform on the other side prior to the rebuild. I suppose the Co-Op bought it for enough to make it worth BR's while switching the platform to the other side.
