Next Friday, I am looking at doing the Parliamentary service from Stockport to Stalybridge and then possibly doing a day on the Metrolink. Can anyone advise me on the best route and tickets to purchase for this day?

I have a 16-25 railcard as well if it helps.

A return to Stockport, then a Daysaver train & tram (evening restrictions apply to National Rail services but not on Metrolink)

Or it might be better to get a return to Macclesfield then a GM Wayfarer (map), which covers a wider area (and has no evening restrictions)

But they're not valid until 09:30? Parliamentary Service runs at 09:22 from Stockport.

Would they be valid if they're over the minimum spend limit for a 16-25 railcard?

You didn't say what time the train was

The first station at or after 0930 is Denton so you may need to buy a ticket to Denton. An SOR is £12.00 during September-June inclusive or £11.15 during July & August. An SDR is the same price (so pointless buying that) except during July & August when it's cheaper at £10.85

(It's not a named train by the way! People refer to services that only run once a week as "parliamentary" services because that's the minimum frequency that is required for the line to be considered in regular passenger use)

Would they be valid if they're over the minimum spend limit for a 16-25 railcard?
You won't get a discount before 10:00 on any fare that is under the £12 minimum during the months it applies.

Will the OP only need to buy a (slightly cheaper) bus & tram only daysaver, as his journey from Denton to Stalybridge then on to Manchester will be covered by his Stoke-Denton return?

Stoke to Denton would be valid via Guide Bridge, but if the OP is continuing to Stalybridge by rail then it's dubious whether it's valid via Stalybridge, however I say that without checking the Routeing Guide. If you've checked and that's valid then fine but I'd try to obtain an itinerary in case of any disputes.

Having said all that, due to the minimum fare, a return from Stoke to Stalybridge is going to cost the same price (£12) anyway.

I personally would get the Denton ticket for the novelty factor (and to boost the stats ) and get the inclusive rail & tram ticket, as some of those Metrolink branches are best done in combination with rail journeys. On the other hand, the ability to use buses would also be useful.

Without going too off-topic, Greater Manchester PTE (or whatever they call themselves these days) has a rather daft pricing strategy, with a complicated array of fares, which penalises passengers for using multiple modes.

The Wayfarer is fantastic value, and gets round the evening peak restrictions, but is a waste if it's mostly being used for Metrolink.

Oops! I had forgot about Guide Bridge, sorry.

The Wayfarer is indeed exceptional value, especially once you reach 60, when it becomes £6. This is cheaper than a CDR from either of my localish stations into Manchester, and gives me the freedom to return on the "other" route, depending on train times.

Right, Having to do it now due to not being in Stoke over summer (uni student), and I'll get the rail and tram ticket, will be easiest I think, I haven't really planned this much after doing the Stockport to Stalybridge train.

Indeed! And perhaps I can cheekily plug our GM Wayfarer forum meet on Saturday 18 Julyhttp://www.railforums.co.uk/GM Wayfarer - Saturday 18 July ;) It's been a long time since we saw you so please do join us if you can, and that goes for any other members who wish to join us.

Yes, I heard about that from John @ Home, though some staff struggle to find it on the system as it's a separate fare, not a discount as such. Though Trainfan344 and I may have a while to wait to qualify, but I will recommend it to people I know who do qualify!

Trainfan344 - feel free to ask for any assistance in planning your route. We have quite a few members who are familiar with the GM area who would be happy to help.

You can at least have fun by asking for the Denton ticket at Stoke on Trent :p

Okay, can anyone tell me the best option to get from Stalybridge onto Metrolink and then the best way to get all the metrolink lines done?

Ashton u Lyne is your nearest.
Rochdale to Bury or v.v. could be done by bus.
East Didsbury NR and Metrolink aren't far apart.
Finishing at Altrincham would allow you to pick up NR to Stockport (but you might have a long wait).

Others on the forum may have cleverer ideas.
