I travelled on 378214 on the East London Line on Sunday but foolishly forgot to check whether it was a 4 car or 5 car (I had assumed that all trains on the ELL are now 5 cars).
However on the same day, 378213 was on the North London Line as a 4 car, and as far as I'm aware the 378/2s are being extended in numerical order.

I think 201-210 only were extended as 10 dual voltage units is all the ELL can swallow up on top if the 378/1 DC only units. Any further unit extensions have to wait until the Watford-Euston, NLL and/or WLL gain their extended platforms. So I guess 378214 was just borrowed for the ELL while one of the extended 378s was out of service. I should explain that the ELL was due to get platform extension work completed first.

The units are iirc so far being extended roughly in order but not completely so.

I have no idea if the Wat-Eus, WLL and/or NLL are ready for longer 378s yet but I have not noticed any longer units on those lines. Its got to be imminent though.

I have noticed that even a four car 378 seems very long when viewed from inside !.

I swear there is a thread on the 378s but I cannot find it .

The last delivery of 5th coaches was on 10/04/2015 when the 5th coaches for 378210/211/212/214 were delivered. I've seen it reported that 378214 is now 5 coaches long, although I can't personally verify it, but 378213 won't be (as you noted) as for some reason its 5th coach was not delivered in order.

In which case I *guess* that the 5-car 378214 was tried out early on the ELL (East London Line) where 5-cars is not a new risk. So that may well be what "12CSVT" saw.

Oh and thanks "Clip" for finding the thread.

I've just added a post to the existing thread so it should be a little easier to find for a while (also thanks to "Clip" for saving me the bother of searching for it!)

It's being suggested on the District Dave forum that the first 5-car service will operate on the NLL tomorrow, all being well.

378214 (complete with 5-car train decals on the front) was stabled at New Cross Gate depot today.

Not sure what happened to the 5-car North London Line service - given the times suggested elsewhere I would have expected it to work 2N67 1355 Stratford to Richmond which was cancelled due to an error.

However, that error appears to have happened at Gunnersbury

There is definitely one that has not got its 5th car as tonight I have just travelled up from London and there was one car sandwich between the barrier wagons behind a 66 at Willesden

That coach was for 378 215; was delivered last night and the barrier wagons should be on their way back to Derby later.

My assumption is that none of 378215-378234 and 378255-378257 have been extended to 5-car yet and perhaps a couple in the 378201-378214 range might not yet be 5-car..

I have been on 378 210 twice in the last week between Euston and Watford so presume that has not been extended yet (didn't bother counting the coaches )
