Hello,

Trying to work out the best way to ticket a journey I'm making later today.

I'm going from Fareham to Portsmouth Harbour, then later going from Portsmouth to Guildford. Tomorrow I need to come back from Guildford to Fareham.

First thought was getting an SVR Portsmouth - Guildford, then using the Fareham to Portsmouth part of the return leg first, but I'm aware that this is not technically permitted, and may well hit up against break of journey issues.

Would I be better getting a single to Portsmouth, then a SVR Portsmouth - Guildford and stopping short on the return leg?

Or is there something else I've missed?

I have a 16-25 if that's relevant.

Cheers,

Freddie

What did you end up purchasing?

A £19.95 SVR from Fareham to Guildford (route Havant) would have been suitable as it can be used via Portsmouth Harbour; Webtis booking engines (such as TPE) will give an itinerary allowing the doubleback.

Hopefully SWT would honour the itinerary but you never know these days ;)

It's a perfectly normal double-back and wouldn't ever be disallowed. I agree that that's the most suitable ticket to buy.

Wish I'd seen the replies on here before I went!

I hadn't checked a map, and in my head Fareham and Guildford were both "towards London" from Portsmouth, entirely forgetting there's several routes. (I normally get on a Waterloo - Portsmouth train to get to Fareham.

Ended up getting a single to Portsmouth, then a return Portsmouth - Guildford; then realising at Havant on the way back that I almost certainly wasn't valid to Fareham and bought another single.

Bit annoying ;)

We've all made mistakes like that in the past ;)

At least if you need to make the journey again, you know the most suitable* option.

*I can't guarantee cheapest because forumites are constantly uncovering ridiculous loopholes :D
