Hello again

Firstly I should mention that I have an over 60 railcard and also an oyster card which has my over 60 linked to it.

On a previous post I discussed Gatwick to Picadilly and the best reply for me was a ' Gatwick to Boundary Zone 6 single for £3.45' and then going out and back in at Croydon using my oyster card.

I am doing the same journey again next week and wanted to buy the ' Gatwick to Boundary Zone 6 single for £3.45' in advance but cannot find it on national rail enquiries. I wanted to book it in advance so that I don't waste time at Gatwick on my return journey from abroad.

When I use NRE I get offered two prices, Thameslink for £2-95 'anytime' or £3-30 at fixed times (on Southern I think). But I do not get offered the ' Gatwick to Boundary Zone 6 single for £3.45'.

I cannot find that ticket on the system.

Does anyone know how I can find the ' Gatwick to Boundary Zone 6 single for £3.45' ticket online? Or must I buy it from the airport at Gatwick like I did last time?

Many thanks for any help

I hope they didn't give you that advice as East Croydon is in Zone 5 not Zone 6 so you wouldnt have paid the correct fare.

I take it your Oyster is PAYG yes?

Only available from a ticket office (and a couple of Southern TVMs *may* offer it if you check there on the day as well). Do you have a Travelcard though, as this ticket is only really valid if you hold a season ticket on your Oyster or a paper travelcard?

You cannot use a "boundary zone" fare in conjunction with Oyster Pay-as-you-go. The "boundary zone" fare can only be used with a Travelcard, either a paper day Travelcard or a season ticket Travelcard on paper or Oyster. The "boundary zone" fare will be from the end of the zone your Travelcard runs out (e.g. you'd need a "boundary zone 4" ticket if you had a Z1-4 Travelcard).

If you're using Oyster PAYG you must buy a ticket from the station you touch in/out at, so in your case you'll need a ticket from East Croydon to Gatwick. This is usually the same price as the Boundary Zone 6 fare anyway. Also remember that East Croydon is in zone five, not zone six.

This is what you were told last time.

Do you have a Freedom Pass? That would count as a Season ticket allowing a Gatwick - Boundary Zone 6 ticket to be used (providing use is within the time restrictions of the Freedom Pass). There's no need to leave the train at Croydon in this case, or even for the train to call there.

Otherwise you will need a Gatwick-East Croydon Anytime Day Single (£3.45), and touch in at East Croydon, as stated above. (You could equally well use this ticket with a Freedom Pass, it's the same price anyway).

In my experience, all Southern TVMs offer Boundary Zone tickets.

But as others have said, if you're not using it in conjunction with a Travelcard, then you probably should be buying the Gatwick - East Croydon ticket.

The benefit of a Travelcard and Gatwick-BZ6 combination over a Travelcard and Gatwick-East Croydon combination is that the former is valid on the Gatwick Express, whereas the latter is not.

A Travelcard season ticket and Gatwick-East Croydon is valid on Gatwick Express. I regularly do that, never had an issue.

Sorry, you're spot on, I should have made it clear I was talking about paper "day" tickets. With a railcard, you can get an Off-Peak Travelcard trip into London on the Gatwick Express for £12.

Can you clarify what you mean by "over 60" and what sort of Oyster card it is?

If you have a Travelcard or Freedom Pass or 60+ Oyster photocard, you are entitled to use Boundary Zone 6 tickets (see this thread for discussion of the 60+ Oyster photocard)

But if not, and you just have a Senior Railcard discount loaded onto a standard Oyster card for which you are using Pay As You Go (PAYG), then that is not a travel pass, and you therefore cannot legitimately use a Boundary Zone 6 extension as you have no pass to extend.

I agree that if you are using tickets in accordance with NRCoC Condition 19(a) (or, for completeness, 19(c) as clarified in posts #7 & #8), there is no requirement for the train to call at any intermediate station, therefore the trains which do not call intermediately (ie, Southern's Gatwick Express route) can be used.

Thank you for all of the replies.
For clarity:
I have a:
Senior Railcard discount loaded onto a standard Oyster card for which I am using Pay as you go (PAYG).

I am ONLY travelling from Gatwick airport to Picadilly. Not the other way around.

In other words a one way journey only from Gatwick to Picadilly.

In conclusion what would be my best option? For the ticket from Gatwick to Croydon?

And separate question: Presumably I cannot use the Gatwick express because it does not stop at Croydon and I need to get off at Croydon to touch in my Oyster card for the journey from Croydon to Picadilly ???

Thanks again

Cheapest off-peak would be a single to East Croydon (£3.45), disembark and touch in to continue your journey to Picadilly by rail & Tube (£6.50 peak, £3.05 off-peak).

Fastest, and cheapest in the peak, would be a single to London Blackfriars (£5.20 weekends, £6.75 Anytime) and Tube (£2.30 peak, £1.50 off peak) from London Bridge or Blackfriars (not valid to Victoria, may be quicker to change at East Croydon).

Most convenient and most expensive would be a single to London Terminals (Not Gatwick Exp) at £10.15, then Tube as above. (There's an unholy mess of other tickets with Train Operating Company restrictions and/or to specific terminals, I'm trying to keep it simple!)

I'd be concerned if a train calling itself Gatwick Express did not call at Gatwick Airport...
Yes I just meant non stop to Gatwick Airport, however Southern do have trains which are in their Gatwick Express route livery (and used to say 'Gatwick Express' on the side until they removed the word Gatwick) not calling at Gatwick, and they also do have trains which they purport to be operated by the fictional 'operator' 'Gatwick Express' which do not call at Gatwick (example 1A48, as discussed here)

If you have an address in a London borough, you should get a 60+ Oyster photocard and then you will only need a single from Gatwick Airport to Boundary Zone 6 or East Croydon.

I only live occasionally in London with my daughter. Mostly I live in the midlands. So I am not eligible. But thanks anyway.
