DMU set routingworking through the day

Hi there,

On realtimetrains.co.uk is it possible to be able to see where a specific DMU set works throughout the day? Basically the one I'm interested in initially is the 06:53 service from Frodsham into Manchester Piccadilly. I'd be quite interested to see whether sets just go backwards and forwards on the same route all day or whether they initially start on one route and then get used on another.

Just wondering how I could work it out?

It doesn't list the specific unit numbers , however if you are on it in the morning and take down the number and 'follow' it on the site , it is easily possible.

The unit numbers are not available information in the public forum.

There will be a base plan for what a given unit works over the course of a day, but this is subject to change based on maintenance requirements, failures and the like.

By the looks of it, the unit in question is diagrammed as follows:

• 5D50 0428 Chester DMU Depot - Llandudno Junction
• 1H80 0546 Llandudno Junction - Manchester Piccadilly
• 1D32 0750 Manchester Piccadilly - Holyhead
• 1V95 1040 Holyhead - Llanelli
• 1W97 1645 Llanelli - Chester
• 5D97 2127 Chester - Chester DMU Depot

Go into the detailed search on RTT and click on the train. Then note the platform it arrives on at Manchester and then click on Manchester Piccadilly. Then look down through the list and find the next working from that platform - that's how you can track a train through the day.

I assume this is because you're upset at it being a 2-car set? This was explained to you before in another thread (see link below) - you have to look at what the train works throughout the day rather than one train in isolation. In fact I answered that question myself in post #368 on the page below in response to your own post.

In essence the rest of that train's diagram would not justify anything more than a 2-car set. The earlier 3-car train works a peak service from Manchester in the evening - it could not be operated by a 2-car set.

That's exactly what that set is diagrammed to do.

I've discovered info on RTT is not always accurate regarding platforms in the case of empty stock and shunt movements. For example, I discovered on y this week a train terminating at Cardiff Central and the stock leaving for Canton from another !!!

Correct - the information given out by the Network Rail feeds and therefore on Trust, is always a "as planned" scenario - if there was never any disruption (train failures, etc), then what is planned would happen all the time. However disruption causes changes during the day, therefore what is planned to happen, particularly with shunts and movements to and from depots may change.

I have seen "Planned" moves not compatible also. However, to get a more reliable picture it may be more prudent to refer to a future date.
