:) Suggestions, please for (walk-up) adult split tickets for a day return from Manchester Stns to Stamford (Lincs). No railcard. No advance tickets. Thanks!

Prestatyn-Nottingham CDR (08:30) £27.80
Nottingham-Stamford SVR (09:00) £24.60
Total: £52.40

£21 cheaper than Manchester-Stamford, but forces you via Nottingham.

trainsplit.com suggests a combination of four Off-Peak Day Returns (CDRs):

CDR Manchester Stations - Stockport £3.40 (M-F: 0930-1600 & from 1830)
CDR Stockport - Derby £20.60 (M-F: from 0900)
CDR Derby - Leicester £10.70 (M-F: from 0930)
CDR Leicester - Stamford (Lincs) £13.30 (M-F: 0930-1529 & from 1816).

Total £48.00.

Yeah its an anomaly.

Haven't checked the permitted routes, but I suspect it gives you a wider selection of journeys. It's only around 70p more than Manchester-Nottingham,

Prestatyn to Nottingham also used to be valid via Liverpool until about 5 years ago. I always kept quiet about it and used it for day trips from Nottingham to Liverpool. It was then mentioned a few times on this forum and it quickly disappeared!
I hope it won't disappear via Manchester now its been mentioned again!

How do you know? I can't see any evidence of that. The small difference in fares is likely to do with clustering, that isn't evidence of an anomaly.

The route should be "via Stoke-on-Trent", not "Any Permitted". There should be two flows, Any Permitted (much more expensive) and the other cheaper SOT option.

:D That's the one that I went with. Thanks. Connections via Prestatyn and Nottingham were a bit rubbish!
