The Shropshire Star has posted on its website an article stating that Shropshire rail passengers face travel chaos over the bank holiday!
http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2015/04/24/shropshire-passengers-facing-bank-holiday-rail-chaos/
Check out the picture used!
All Arriva Trains Wales services between Shrewsbury and Birmingham New Street will be replaced by buses on May 3 and Bank Holiday Monday, while Virgin Trains will not run any services to or from Shrewsbury over the entire weekend.

Trains between Shrewsbury and Manchester Piccadilly will also be diverted via Chester and Warrington Bank Quay on the Sunday due to improvement work being carried out by Network Rail in the Crewe area. These services will not stop at Crewe, Wilmslow or Stockport.

Errr, Smethwick!
If you actually read the Shropshire Star article, it goes on to mention engineering work in various other places around the country, including south and west London. So a stock picture of Clapham Junction, while not exactly grabbing the attention of local readers, is not entirely irrelevant.

How many passengers living in Shropshire are likely to travel through Clapham Junction over a holiday weekend?

but they would be complaining about the railway even more when the lack of any engineering work causes a train to derail and cause injuries/death (as happened with the pendolino at grayrigg).
You can't win can you?

goodness me, this again? :roll::roll::roll:

for the 9 millionth time: It is a stock picture taken from a photographic library and used to illustrate an article intended for the general public who will not care if it is a picture of Shrewsbury, Clapham Junction, Invenerss or even Tokyo!

Get a grip. <(<D

I'm not sure which I find funnier. When people complain about a story in the papers/online and claim it must be a slow news/no news day, or instances like this where they complain about a stock photo, it's even less of an event.

Could be worst, could have an image of an American metro train

Any idea where this stock picture is from?

Which is precisely the reason for my second comment !

Due to continual cutbacks to local newspapers, the Shropshire Star would never send a photographer down to Shrewsbury station, take a photo of the building, and upload it as a file photo for the story. A lot of local newspapers no longer have snappers due to budget cutbacks.

As long as the stock photo does the job, I don't see why anyone should complain. The days when local papers had photographers, picture editors and lots of reporters continually roaming their turf have long gone.

Agreed, on all points. However....

At some point in the last few decades, a Shropshire Star photographer will have taken a photograph (maybe even a couple!) of Shrewsbury railway station. That photo, along with innumerable others taken over the decades, will have gone into the newspaper's Picture Library, and the same applies to every other station and every other local newspaper.

When I worked in the Editorial Department of a provincial newspaper (which shall remain anonymous!) the need for a stock photo for a story meant wading through packets of photographs all neatly labelled by subject and arranged carefully on acres of library shelving to find the best one for the story. (Or, if it was a political story, you looked for a photo that wasn't the best one! ;)) Today, all those pictures are digitised and on a searchable database making finding the best picture even easier. The top-and-bottom of the use of incongruous photographs for the story they are supposedly illustrating is that (more often than not) the journalist just can't be a***ed.

Whether or not that matters is a different argument!

And when they use that photo someone on here will point out that the platform has been repainted, or the type of train shown is no longer running, or it's in an out of date livery or whatever.

30 seconds to type Shrewsbury Railway Station into Google Images would have done it!! ( I just did )

London, Surrey... bit of a blur round here...
But you cannot just take one of those images, even with credit.
Do a Creative Commons search, and you pretty much can. (For this situation, instead of using Google Images, you could use Geograph instead.)

(Yes, I know there are restrictions even with CC licensed items, hence why I said 'pretty much'. My point is that it's not a complete 'cut-and-dry' restriction that images from Google Images cannot be used. For those interested, I do have a handout from a past life as a learning resources technician; it might be a bit out of date now with some of the specifics, but you'd get the idea!)

Does anyone think that this bridge might not be on the London Midland network?

Bridge bash at #Sandwell&Dudley is affecting services currently.
Delays of approx. 10 minutes until further notice.
