looks decent that, imagine getting through it though at a local depot (warrington a bike ride from me) and then these 'Terms & Conditions' kick in....

The post holder will be located at the appointing depot for the duration of their traineeship. Following the training programme they may be required to move within the UK to enable them to continue their career with the company.



You will be required to sign a “binding” Learning Contract which will be repayable if you leave the company during the training programme or within 5 years of completing the train driver training.


Whereby you complete your training locally then get posted to somewhere that would require moving house to a place that you'd never wanted to live and you have to do it cos of the 5 year thingy.

The having to maybe up sticks is a clause thats a bit of an off putter really but the rest of it looks like a fantastic opportunity.

I'm not sure the driver courses have fallen through, it's the recruitment for the talent pool they've froze. I spoke to them as I passed the assessment and they said recruitment was still ongoing

It is a foot in the door, but please make sure you are aware that if there are other trainee drivers at your depot who need their train handling hours, you'll be at the back of the queue as a trainee ops manager.

Also, despite driving being part of the training program, you'll spend far more time driving a laptop than you will a train. I'm not posting this to put anyone off, but merely to point out that you'll be getting trained as an ops manager with driving skills, not a driver with ops manager skills. Good luck to those who apply.

You also need 2 A levels and have 2 years plus experience in rail, engineering or logistics. That's that straight out the window for me haha

2 A levels grade A-C or equivalent or;
Apprenticeship in a rail, engineering or logistics field or;
2+ years work experience in rail, engineering field, logistics plus the following;

'or' meaning not necessarily have got 2 a-levels

so if like myself served an engineering apprenticeship and got at least 2 years experience (26 ish)

see your point buddy but for say transport managers, logistics managers looking to go into rail freight looks like a tidy job. also I would bet my left nut that when fully competent and independent the salary would reflect the responsibility and flexibility of the role. certainly put a smile on my fleet managers face Monday morning.

Oh, I absolutely agree. If it is a management role you're after then it's a good one to go for as you will learn a hell of a lot over the three years. However, if people are applying and thinking its a back door into being a driver then it's probably best to look elsewhere.

I can highly recommend the programme, but as has been said above it is not a shortcut, or even really a route into a driving job.

does the situation arise where they ever say "we are transferring you to ..... & you have to go or pay us back the cost of training you" ?
I suppose it something thats in there in the contract just in case they need to do it, and so that you cant elect to not go there.

I think you're probably right in that the clause is included should it ever need to be invoked, rather than something that will be used at a moments notice.
