Season ticket between Newport and Gloucester.

VERY OCCASIONALLY I got via Bristol (usually only if there is a problem with line) because it takes longer/too much hassle to change. But I understand it is a valid route.

The other day I had some work in Bristol. Travelled Newport-Glos as normal then got a lift there (to bristol) but rather than travel back to Gloucester, I got lift to Bristol Parkway and got on train back to newport from there.

Ticket barrier at Parkway let me through, didnt see guard on train. Was it OK what I did?

Yes, a season ticket can be used for any journey between any pair of stations that are on a permitted route.

By using something called the routing guide. For more info on it; see the RailUK Fares & Ticketing Guide - Section 3 - Routeing.
For the route you want to use, you can go direct via Lydney, or via Bristol, so from what I can tell you can use it as far as Temple Meads, and of course break your journey at any station.

Also, I don't know whether you ever go there, but a season to Cheltenham is the same price, so you could get a little extra validity for free.

Newport-Cheltenham has exactly the same validity as Newport-Gloucester. Newport-Ashchurch lets you go a bit further, but there's no point unless you ever catch a train that way.

Ebbw Vale Parkway-Gloucester (or Ashchurch) is only a little more expensive (£4 extra on a £2980 annual season ticket), and may be worth considering if you ever go west of Newport by train.

So you never go to anywhere like the Midlands by rail?

If you might, it's worth getting the extra validity as you never know when it may prove useful.

Im guessing cheltenham is limit for same price as glos? i.e. Its more for birmingham?

BTW. What about cardiff-Glos is that the same as newport-glos? Occasionally, I might need to go to cardiff after work so would buy a separate ticket for this.

EDIT- Just checked. A 7 day season ticket for CDF-GLOS is 10p more than NEWP-GLOS. So probably should have bought one from cardiff to glos.

Got a month one now. Can I now amend this from CDF-GLOS instead of NEWP-GLOS. Its 40p more! Otherwise, odd journey to cardiff is going to cost me £6 a time!

Yes, you can get a Season ticket Changeover

It may also be worth buying the Season in 5 week blocks (typically starting on a Monday and finishing on a Friday but taking into account bank holidays and annual leave) rather than 1 week at a time.

Also from our Fares Guide:
Maximising value

If you wish to purchase a season ticket, it is worth checking prices from nearby stations which might be the same. Doing so could provide opportunities to save money on journeys not covered by the season ticket. For example, instead of purchasing a LUTON [NLC 1536] - LEICESTER [NLC 1947] season ticket, buy a HARPENDEN [NLC 1543] - LEICESTER [NLC 1947] season ticket (valid via Luton), which is the same price. This way if you wish to travel to London, you only have to pay from Harpenden.
