I know the state of Northern's 142s has been moaned about many a time but whilst dropping a friend at the station tonight I noticed the unit operating the service (21:51 HUD - LDS, an unrefurbished one with benches) had a fair bit of rust/corrosion at almost every join and under the window sills.

Seems pretty dodgy to me. Do they ever replace panels or treat the corrosion or do they just paint over it and hope for the best?

The Northern (Newton Heath)142s owned by Angel Trains, are under going a programme of corrosion repairs, this is been done by contractors at Holbeck depot in Leeds, it involves complete renewal of the floors and other areas.
£120,000 a pop, and they just put the existing seating back in!! The work takes around 2-3 weeks and are returned to NH by Freightliner HH drivers.

I noticed this on 142023 the other day. £120.000 a pop? Didn't even
look like £120 worth of work done. The units themselves aren't worth £120.000!

Worth only in profit to the banks...

They are worth what the owners can legally get from the TOCs. The fact that they aren't new is irrelevant as a written down value is just for company asset purposes. The revenue that they bring in is the important figure.
By the same reckoning many of the cars running around on the roads have a written-down value below the caost of their VED. That doesn't stop their owners putting ten times as much value in fuel into them and paying to get them past the MOT every year.

I wrote to Northern a couple of months ago complaining about the seating on their pacers! Benches are still better imho.

Apologies for going off topic here but I though Holbeck had closed years a go. Do any of the TOC's use it on a regular basis?
