A person has been killed by being hit by a train at Surbiton station (South-West London, serving Waterloo in London); the incident occurred just before mid-day, and all services stopped for a while. Services are still severely affected, with Hampton Court and semi-fasts to Woking all cancelled, and Exeter and Salisbury services starting at Basingstoke. Disruption is likely to last until 19.00. No details about the person involved; there have been several people killed at Surbiton station, with some of them having been patients in the mental health services at a nearby hospital. The driver of the train is reported to be severely shocked; it must be awful to have this happen in front of oneself.

Just been reported on BBC local news that Waterloo "has had to be closed" due to massive overcrowding.

Very sad this happened, it always is.

I have to give top props for station staff at Clapham Junction and Waterloo when I travelled today though. The guard on the train I was on (it was a Juniper that arrived into Platform 16, possibly this?) was brilliant. I meant to thank him but I was already halfway to Waterloo East for the 1623 before I remembered. A letter to SWT Customer Services is in order, me thinks.

It's chaos out there. Surbiton. Failed train at clapham Junction. Clapham yard shut most of the day (no idea why) but stops the ability to clear trains out the way. Absolute chaos.

They are having a very bad day so my sympathies are in equal measure to those involved directly with the Surbiton incident, staff at SWT/NR Alliance, crews and customer facing and all the passengers caught up in this disruption

Cancellations to services on all routes

Following a person hit by a train earlier between Wimbledon and Surbiton all lines have now reopened.
Impact:
Train services running across the whole South West Trains network may be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 mins or revised at short notice. Disruption is expected until 02:00 28/04.
Customer Advice:
A person was struck by a train between Wimbledon and Surbiton at approximately 1130 this morning. This meant the lines were closed for approximately 2 hours while emergency services investigated. These lines are critical to the operation of the railway into and out of London Waterloo, and this incident has caused widespread disruption to the South West Trains network. Traincrew and stock is displaced and major congestion is currently disrupting services entering and departing London Waterloo.
-
Additionally, a train fault at Clapham Junction has resulted in the Windsor lines being closed until 18:30. This means that trains from London Waterloo to Reading, Windsor, Twickenham, Staines and Ascot are severely disrupted. You are strongly advised to find alternative travel options for your journey this evening.
-
Please note Vauxhall rail station is currently not allowing passengers in to prevent severe overcrowding.
-
Customers are advised wherever possible to use alternative routes to complete their journey. Due to the key location of this incident and time that the lines were blocked we expect disruption to continue throughout the evening.
Trains are likely to be busier than usual as we have been unable to run a full service this afternoon.
-
Alternative Travel Information:
Tickets will be accepted on the following
London Buses across South West London.
District Line services between Wimbledon and Central London
Northern Line services between Morden and Central London
Bakerloo Line services from Paddington to Waterloo
Thameslink services between Wimbledon and Central London
First Great Western services from Exeter St Davids to London Paddington
Southern services on routes from Epsom and Portsmouth into London Victoria

There was also report of a broken down train at Barnes some time between the other two incidents.

The broken down train at Clapham Junction was a set that looked as though it had been trying to cross from Clapham yard to the up slow Windsor line and managed to stop where it was blocking all lines.

I think it was class 450 (view from footbridge - could not even get on to the down Windsor line platform)

No sign of swt staff by the time I got there - stm people doing their best.

As soon as the website gave an indication that FGW were accepting tickets, got the heck out of it to Paddington. Managed to get a seat on the 1900 Bristol, and guard making PA announcements prior to departure welcoming SWT passengers and assuring that tickets were being accepted.

No sign of Waterloo bound trains at Reading, and huge crowd waiting for the next Gatwick train. Got out of it again and caught First Berkshire bus back to my corner of Berkshire.

Thoughts go out to the driver involved.

The 12:20 London Waterloo - Bristol Temple Meads stood no chance getting to Bristol, with the fatalities near Surbiton and at Keynsham. (And the broken down train at Clapham Junction and there were also animals on the line earlier at Trowbridge which also caused delays.)

There were signalling problems at Kew Bridge, which was down as "Cancellations between Barnes and Hounslow".

Couldn't help noticing the Evening Standard making the subsequent delays into yet another negative rail story - they refer to this as just an 'incident', while also highlighting a train failure - people have lost a loved one today, and a driver has to live with this forever, but this paper prefers to twist it to suit their biased views:

Commuters are experiencing major rush hour disruption this evening at Waterloo Station.

Passengers using the station have been hit by severe delays to services to and from Waterloo due to an earlier incident in the Surbiton area.

National Rail said services could see delays of up 90 minutes on all routes through Surbiton, with disruption expected to last until the end of service this evening.

Problems at the station were compounded by a broken down train at Clapham Junction, which is causing disruption on services via Barnes.

There was also major disruption on the Underground this morning as a person was hit by a train on the Victoria Line, at Victoria station.

It has not been a good day.

I have sympathy for all those involved in the Surbiton incident but it wasn't that which caused the chaos last night, it was the failed train at Clapham. Such trains as were running - almost none - were two hours late. How can it possibly take two hours to move a train!!

It's all very well for SWT to allow tickets to be used on other services - though this doesn't work in my experience - but once you're outside the London area this arrangement doesn't help. I had to drive from Bracknell to Staines to pick up my son from his office because there was no other way for him to get home. Will SWT pay for my petrol? Will they compensate him and me for our lost time due to their incompetence? Why didn't they arrange taxis and/or buses? Why did they provide so little information? What a way to run a company.

More details on the incident yesterday.

An apology for the disruption to your journey on Monday 27 April

We are very sorry for the serious disruption that many of you will have faced whilst travelling on our services yesterday. This was due to two significant incidents at critical locations on our network.

The first incident occurred at approximately 1130, when we received a report of a person being struck by a train on the lines between Wimbledon and Surbiton. Due to the unfortunate nature of these incidents, emergency services had to close all lines in both directions for two hours to conduct investigations. During this time, many trains were unable to reach their destinations for many hours. This not only affects the trains in service at the time of the incident, but also has a knock-on effect to following services. For example, a train crew that should have been working on a train departing London Waterloo at 15:00 will not yet have arrived at London Waterloo at 15:00 as they will have been working on a previously delayed train.

We worked quickly to divert and alter trains in order to reduce the cascade effect of these delays, however the lines between Wimbledon and Surbiton are essential for us to deliver a full train service, and so their closure led to significant disruption for both long-distance and suburban services.

While we were recovering the service in order to run punctually during the evening peak, we had a second significant incident at Clapham Junction, where a train developed a fault and became unable to move forward. It had stopped across the key junction which serves the Windsor lines. The ‘Down Windsor Slow’, ‘Down Windsor Fast’ and ‘Up Windsor Fast’ lines were all closed for two hours from 16:25. This meant that all trains to Reading, Windsor & Eton Riverside, Twickenham, Ascot, Staines and Hounslow were unable to get to and from London Waterloo.

This incident compounded the earlier delays across the whole of the network. While both incidents were managed as quickly as possible, many train crews were unable to reach their trains to begin or continue working, and the stock for the evening peak departures was unable to reach Waterloo. Many trains were therefore delayed departing Waterloo, and many were then unable to enter a platform at Waterloo.

To help with passenger movement, we quickly arranged for mutual ticket acceptance with First Great Western, Southern Trains, London Underground, LOROL and London Buses. Over 100m passenger journeys a year happen at London Waterloo, and Clapham Junction is Europe’s busiest interchange as such, we put in place a train plan which attempted to ensure that passenger numbers at London Waterloo, Vauxhall and Clapham Junction were moved as quickly as possible to avoid overcrowding.
We appreciate how frustrating it is when your train service doesn’t run as planned. We are very sorry for the disruption you experienced yesterday. We work very closely with the Samaritans and British Transport Police to help identify at-risk individuals to try to reduce the likelihood of incidents of the nature seen today. For more information on this work, please visit http://www.samaritans.org/your-community/saving-lives-railway/suicide-and-railways.

Tuesday 28 April
As disruption continued late into the evening many trains finished their journey in the wrong location. This has meant that this morning many of our services are formed of fewer coaches than normal or a differnt type of train to normal. All alterations will be available to view on our website at www.journeycheck.southwesttrains.co.uk

Once again, we are sorry for the disruption to your journey.
