Another one at Keynsham today which appears to have been rather more serious when looking into the nature of the incident The train was FGW 12 30 Cardiff to Portsmouth Harbour but the nature of the incident was rather unusual in so much as the person was still in flight at point of impact and came through the windscreen and damaged the cab instruments. Fortunately the driver escaped serious injury and was unharmed but obviously shaken and our thoughts are with him and the family of the person involved. The 3 Car 158 will no doubt be running as a 2 Car for a while - number not known at the moment.

Sounds horrendous, obviously these incidents are bad enough anyway. Hope the poor driver is as well as can be in the circumstances.

Keynsham and Oldfield Park seem pretty bad for railway deaths. Thoughts go to the driver involved.

No doubt as a result there was major disruption on services to London Paddington/Bristol Temple Meads, Cardiff Central/Portsmouth Harbour and the stopping services with many services terminating at Westbury and starting at Bristol Temple Meads and vice versa.

I am personally not happy with the suggestion that the unit will be running as a 2-car as it won't, unless it is permanently coupled.

That said, the description of what may have happened is rather dramatic, if true.

Suicides, as I guess this was, are always difficult; if we now have people throwing themselves off bridges then the driver paradigm has changed from the difficult-to-get-over to the did-he/she-try-to-kill-me?

Small pedantic point. Such deaths are only classified as suicide by a coroner. Until then it will merely be said to be either suspicious or non-suspicious.

Appreciated. Re the unit, I'm not sure if you know the FGW 158s. There are a number formed as 3 Car Sets except for 798 which is a natural 3 Car Set. The others have been formed by using 2 Car Sets with a number split and the vehicles having been added to other 2 Car Sets with the intention of providing additional capacity on the Cardiff to Portsmouth Hbr route. They are then on different maintenance schedules which entails splitting and reforming by using a spare vehicle that is available..

The unit will be subject a thorough underframe clean and the undamaged coaches might be put back in service as a 2 coach train while the other one is repaired. Nothing unusual in that as it keeps the maximum number of coaches in service and FGW need as many as possible in service.

An appallingly insensitive end to your musings. You have no concept of the subject to which you refer ..... others on here are likely to have had first hand experience or know of such tragedies. To those of you, you have my sympathies.

What are you on about?

Why so many here tonight wanting to censor discussion?

Detailed information regarding fatalities on the network will always be a sensitive issue, and it's a delicate balance between being informative, and being needlessly graphic..

Personally I'm not of a sensitive disposition (quite the opposite) - and the opening post didn't bother me at all, however I'm not railway staff, and I've never been personally involved in an incident of this nature, so I might not be the best barometer of what is acceptable in this case.

There is a difficult balance between 'reporting' and giving the impression of a morbid interest in trains involved in the incident and consequential delays, rather than being rather more discreet and having a thought for the poor soul that took their own life. Personally, I find discussions of this type rather odious.

It didn't bother me either but like you I'm not railway staff but I have a friend who is a BTP officer and I know how awful such incidents can be and this was clearly worse than most.

Whereas I don't. I appreciate we're all different.

I see no need to just be offering sympathies and platitudes. And if folk want to discuss the unit involved and the issues around delays, that's fine by me.

I'd actually like to learn more about how such incidences are dealt with. The damage that can be caused to rolling stock, the investigation by police, the body removal and clean up.

On the specific of discussion about the unit involved it should be noted that the number was provided here by rail staff.

I'm a guard and I have no issue with the content. It's something that happened that the crew (and as FGW and the DfT haven't yet got their way, it is still a crew) have had to deal with. The body entering the cab is a particularly unpleasant experience but these things do happen.

I hope whoever was at the controls recovers from the shock, in whatever time they need, of course.

If you think that is insensitive I hope you never walk into a messroom when these things are being discussed, you would have a fit!

'Black' humour being what it is, if you don't laugh you will cry, and yes I have been involved in one of these, a rather messy one at that!

I agree with the post above from Lowlevel as well!

A genuine, respectful suggestion then to those who are easily offended by this type of discussion - many do find the subject fascinating, even if it is somewhat morbid. It's human nature, little different to watching 'Bones' or CSI, or even Aircrash Investigation or whatever. Without that type of interest in grizzly subjects we would live in a world devoid of coroners and pathologists, among others. It is rarely intended to be disrespectful, and those directly affected by any particular incident are unlikely to be flicking through a forum looking for - and then reading - threads on the subject. It is a tragically frequent happening and very definitely comes under the topic of incidents affecting the railway. A person jumping under or being hit by a train is not a discreet occurrence and will generally cause significant levels of discussion in various circles.

So the crux of it; these threads very rarely have titles that are anything other than abjectly self explanatory - 'Fatality Keynsham' being an example. Most forum users here are intelligent enough to work out what such a thread will likely refer to. If any further information on the matter is likely to offend, don't read it! Carefully reading every post and then posting yourself, criticising others' discussion, is both baffling and frankly rather silly. People are free to discuss, reading and participation are both entirely optional.

That is all!

I find all this quite odd to be honest. A little while ago there was a neat (as in tidy) little thread that detailed all the railway fatalities in one place. This was then locked as people complained and rules changed to state that no further topics should be posted unless there was a clear operational reason for it.

Low and behold every day now there is a new appears to be a new topic on a new fatality.

How do you stop someone throwing themselves under a train? Answer is, you can't, end of. The same way you can't stop someone slitting their wrists or hanging themselves. What you can do in the vast majority of suicide cases is to identify the person is at risk in the first place and intervene. Sadly though, none of the main political parties deem this worthy of the funding and through the already savage cuts by the uncaring Tory/LD alliance and the more than the same to follow if this dreadful partnership ever get the keys to number 10 again. It is nothing short of a disgrace that vulnerable people, many who have pleaded for help are being left to just get on with it.
It's shameful.

I don't think that GB was making a comment about railway fatalities (as sad, traumatising, and disruptive as they might be) but more a comment about users on here constantly posting details about the latest incident, wherever it is on the network, which is what we had before the master thread.

Perhaps clarification is needed on what constitutes "a clear operational reason" so that we don't end up with loads of "fatality at placename date" threads

Well said "Bestwestern" I for one am grateful for the detail, just to appreciate
how awful these events , however tragic, can be for the drivers and other staff that have to deal with the end results.......

I also agree that perhaps the description of the deceased coming through the cab was a bit much, but the rest of the information in the opening thread was enough. It's handy for people like me who commute to Bristol and look through the forum to see of any disruption!

Thanks for the advice, I will stay clear of such threads in future and hopefully you won't get so terribly, terribly upset by opinions that differ from yours. It's an interesting idea you've come up with - if you think something is wrong ignore it - perhaps the moderators will try that and it can just be a free for all.

It wasn't a close call for the driver, it seems (from messages received) that he has suffered some significant injuries, stressing messages I have received.
