Hull Trains have a significant proportion of their services cancelled or starting/finishing short today. Their website states it is due to a train fault but it looks like more changes than would be caused by a single train set being out of use. Anyone know what the issue is?

There are only two of the four units in traffic today unfortunately, one set is on exam and another failed on depot ( three are required to run the timetabled service each day). The various cancellations are as per the contingency plans, which are designed to cause as little disruption as possible to the busiest services.

Weren't almost identical FHT problems to this also reported on here about a couple of weeks ago? If so I suppose that's one rather large problem of open access that's not going to be easy to solve ,with costs obviously only allowing for very small fleets

The contingency plans vary depending where the failed unit is - for example, if there is one available instead of two at Hull for start of service then the service pattern run will vary somewhat from when the one at the London end fails (the latter was the case today) but in either situation, cancellations are inevitable with such a small fleet unless the maintenance regime allows exams etc to be stepped up at short notice.
It is indeed a major issue for a small fleet when one unit is on planned maintenance and another fails. Even if there was a supply of spare and available 125mph diesel stock, costs as you say would be a major factor in deciding whether to invest in a fleet expansion when the additional unit would spend a large amount of time sat spare.
