Hi,

There's been a derailment this morning between Cardiff Canton and Central, looks like its only affecting valley lines. Looks like a 142+143 from the end of P6/7. The 142 looks like it's some way from the line.

Anyone got any info on units, working or anything site-specific - are there any traps or anything by there?

Thanks

5T02 06+59 Canton to Cardiff Central to form 2T02 07 06 Cardiff Cen to Treherbert. Details of alterations can be found on ATW Journey Check.
ATW say operating incident but as you say, in full view for anybody to see that it was a derailment.

To assist those who have problems accessing links ...

A train has derailed at a depot in Cardiff, causing disruption to mainline services in and out of the city.

Arriva Trains Wales said the local line between Cardiff Central and Ninian Park station had been closed.

Trains travelling along the main track through Cardiff Central may be cancelled or delayed by up to 20 minutes and a shuttle service is running from Ninan Park to Radyr.

Disruption is expected to continue until at least 14:00 BST.

A second shuttle service from Heath Low Level to Coryton is running, along with a replacement bus service between Radyr and Coryton, and Cardiff Bus is accepting train tickets on certain routes.

The strange thing about this is that whilst it seems that the City Line was the (main / only ?) part affected, the main line seemed to have problems as well.

When I arrived from Newport at about 7.15am, there were announcements saying that "the Swansea train was delayed and more information would follow". Now, I don't know whether they meant the trains to Swansea, or from Swansea, but if the derailment was between Central and Ninian Park, how would this have affected the main line?

The verbal announcements on the station were saying "an operational Incident" but the screens were saying "a derailment". I don't understand why they have to use jargon instead of using the proper words!

At a guess, it could be blocking units getting in/out of Canton?

Information from an ATW driver is that the train passed a signal at danger leaving Canton - presumably therefore the points weren't set correctly.

I have nothing more than that!

That is feasible. The catch points are set when the route is called before C639 clears. It would definitely affect units leaving canton. You can leave the yard via the East curve ground frame but that requires a shunt out to the east curve sidings if the units are in the shed or 12 - 20 roads

Not specific to this but if what is reported has happened is this most likely a sackable offence?

I would guess that one of the two reasons below, or a combination of, were the reason re operational incident/derailing

1. Staff were repeating what they'd been told
2. Decisions were taken (at a personal level and/or at a mid management level) to say operational incident because derailment sounds nasty.

In actual fact, the derailment was the result of the operating incident, so it seems if info is correct but I prefer not to prejudge. It would appear that "operational incident" is the usual term (or jargon) used when what appears (from the posts) has happened.

All depends on the severity of the incident.....usually anyway.

Don't think any driver would want to be involved in one !

There seems to be no catch points in that pic"I stand to be corrected" maybe just a track fault

I went passed it yesterday and took 3 pics but they're not any better than the ones posted.
Was fixed about 5.30 pm.

Definitely a set of trap points under the derailed end of the unit if you zoom in on the flikr picture above.
