ScotRail DMU bashing

Hi guys

I am planning on spending the day (either Thursday or Friday) traveling from Glasgow to the central belt and Edinburgh.
I will be departing from Glasgow early in the morning and returning back some time in the evening.
I'm hoping to spend the day sampling the rich variety of DMU's that the network has to offer whilst also enjoying the scenery.
I dont really have a fixed plan as such but i would really like my day to include some class 156's and a jont "or two" across the forth rail bridge.
is there such a ticket that i could purchase on the day that would be better value than buying single tickets?

In the past I have usually tried to catch an early morning 156 from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh Waverley but it can sometimes be a toss of a coin on whether you get a 156 or a 158 and i "really" would like a 156 if possable.

But as I say I don't have any fixed plans so any ideas/suggestions would be very much appreciated

Hello there,
There is a ticket available for such a thing, the Central Scotland 3in7 Rover. It's valid for any 3 days out of a consecutive 7 across Central Scotland. unfortunately, however, there isn't a 1 day equivalent available anywhere so you would either have to have 3 days on the rails or forfeit two days. Either way, I believe it's £30.60.
Also, if you're looking for an early morning Glasgow to Edinburgh 156 run, (I don't know how accurate this is) the 07:13 Glasgow Central to Edinburgh is formed from an ECS move from Corkerhill depot, so I'd say that was a 156.

It is a toss up between a 156 and 158, aye which is really awkward if you want a 156 in particular! Fingers crossed for you

Central Scotland is the only ticket that would give you the flexibility you need. £36 in October 2014 but it's exceptional value. Covers up to Dunblane, Alloa, all 4 routes between Glasgow and Edinburgh, over to North Berwick, down to Newcraighall, the Fife Circle and up to Markinch.

If that's not enough to convince you that it's worth doing, then just think of how many 156s, 158s, 170s, 334s and 380s you can score on the rover. Then of course there's the 68s on the peak time Fife Circle turns!

I concur about the Central Scotland Rover, it is indeed exceptional value.
There are some single day rangers that cost almost as much (East Midlands Day Ranger, I'm looking at you!)

A smaller area day ranger version of the Central Scotland would be awesome. Or just one from say North Berwick/Newcraighall to Edinburgh Park/Inverkeithing would be quite nice!

That would be good - effectively an Edinburgh based version of the Roundabout ticket!

Also, the Central Scotland rover is valid after 0915, not 0930. I use it frequently on the 0915 GLQ-EDB and 0919 GLQ-ALO services.

Yeah a roundabout ticket for Edinburgh would certainly float my boat, I certainly need to get back over the Border sooner rather than later, got more than enough on my plate at the minute though.

The printout I've got says 09:15 start time, only 09:30 if you're on a 2T railcard

It is definitely valid from 09:15.

The central scotland 3in7 rover ticket at £30.60 sounds like just the job to me
I will also be making a return trip from Glasgow to Livingston on sunday so i can use it then as well

Idealy i would prefer a 156 to a 158 so i will pay the extra for a single to Waverley and buy the 3in7 there.

I still haven't finalised my route yet but i was thinking of catching a few Fife circle bound DMU's to enable me to have a few jonts across the Forth rail bridge, and on my way back to Glasgow departing from Falkirk Grahamston
Now all i have to do is think of an interesting way of linking them together
I'll let you know how i get on

Make sure you take the fife circle loco hauled too; class 68 and mk2s.
