While waiting for my train at Sheffield yesterday I noticed stop boards at both ends of the Down Station Sidings (for those that aren’t familiar with Sheffield station, it is located between platforms 1 and 2- there’s the platform 1 line, through line, DSS line and platform 2 line). I’m led to believe this has been the case since the Northern Class 158 derailed a few weeks ago.

Does anyone know when they are expected to be back in use and what needs to be done to make this possible? Also, where are they stabling the stock in the meantime? Realtime Trains shows a few ECS moves from the DSS in the morning and the sidings are normally used to stable trains on through the day on Sundays. It must be causing a few operational issues!

I'm sure the 158 derailed on the through lines adjacent to platform 7 though? Do believe it was for a possession of some sort but nothing's changed in a week.

They've been keeping units inbetween P5 and P6 in large volumes and the unit depot at the south end of the station has been wedged in recent days as well.

I'll have to check that one. I bet it's taken a lot of careful planning to make sure that every unit is where it needs to be!

No, it didn't. It derailed next to platform 2. I had the pleasure of watching them gas axe the coupler between the carriages

That seems rather drastic, as a layperson. Surprised there wasn't a way of uncoupling that doesn't involve obliterating both couplings. On the photos of the derailment I don't recall the unit being massively out of alignment.

It is probably a bar coupler and the may have just gas axed the bolts. As these should be renewed anyway, it's quicker to chop the bolts than to get out the spanners and try to do it with them when not over a pit.

That makes sense, though I thought 158s had BSI couplers between vehicles as well as on the cab ends.

They do, hence FGW reforming them into 3 coach units with the inner end of the extra coach coupled to the outer end of one of the other coaches.
