Season Wimbledon to Streatham station(s)

I'll shortly be starting a commute between Streatham and Wimbledon from somewhere half way between Streatham Hill and Streatham (Greater London) stations.

I'm hoping someone can give me advice on the best season ticket option to use. The Thameslink trains through Streatham are quicker but infrequent and I gather they are also quite unreliable, so I'd like to have the option of travelling from Streatham Hill via Clapham Junction as well.

In the absence of the old Streatham fare group, what options do I have that might allow both routes? Would either a cheaper Streatham (£496) or more expensive Streatham Hill (£656) season via any permitted route let me do this?

I know that a Zone 2-3 travelcard would do the trick but it's almost twice the price at £964.

Both the Streatham and the Streatham Hill seasons are £496 annual.

However, for additional validity in the same price, you could think of getting WIMBLEDON CHASE to SYDENHAM HILL, which allows use on the following lines, and includes both your mentioned routes:

Wimbledon Chase to Herne Hill (via Wimbledon and Streatham).
Herne Hill to Beckenham Junction.
Wimbledon Chase to Clapham Junction (via Wimbledon).
Clapham Junction to Beckenham Junction (via Streatham Hill and Crystal Palace).

You can choose to start or end your journey at any station on the lines mentioned.

Stangely I still only see the more expensive price for Streatham Hill on the national rail or brfares prices, not that it matters.

Would a Sydenham Hill ticket open the automatic barriers at Streatham and Streatham Hill, or would I need to show to staff each time?

I've been playing around with the National Rail journey planner this evening, and its new "Other valid routes option".

Interestingly, Wimbledon to Streatham Hill via Streatham does look to be a valid route in itself (via Tulse Hill and West Norwood), as well as the via Clapham Junction option. I can't see the £496 fare for this though, so I guess Sydenham Hill is probably still the best option (if the barriers will open!)

On the other hand, Wimbledon to Streatham via Streatham Hill doesn't seem to be a valid route.

I'd be inclined to test this by buying a one-week season

If the worry is about that route not being very obvious to staff in Streatham if using Sydenham Hill as destination, you could instead go for WIMBLEDON to BIRKBECK, for which the most obvious route is almost certainly the Streatham to Streatham Hill walk. It still allows use of the routes mentioned before (as well as via London Victoria). Strangely, there are less options available if Wimbledon Chase is selected instead of Wimbledon.

Bringing this conversation back to life, I've been looking at actually buying my first ticket this weekend.

According to the journey planner at least, Streatham Hill no longer seems a valid route for Sydenham Hill, whether due to timetable or rooting guide changes. It's now quoted as requiring two tickets, as are many other similar options on that area. Birkbeck does still work but is much more expensive.

Given you're starting or finishing some way between Streatham and Streatham Hill, might I suggest a 57 bus from the High Road (they are very frequent and run all hours) which will take you in a very few minutes to Wimbledon Station, or indeed to other points in Wimbledon which may be even more convenient. I can vouch for their regularity - when I'm waiting for a 417 at Telford Avenue there are usually two or three go by before my bus!

I would agree with that but the rush hour traffic from Tooting through Collier's Wood and Wimbledon can be atrocious. Off peak it's not too bad and maybe beats waiting 30 minutes between Thameslink services, but I can't imagine commuting on it regularly.

On a rail note, Streatham to Clapham Junction looks like it might do. It allows all three routes- via Wimbledon, via Tulse Hill/West Norwood/Streatham Hill and even via Streatham Common, and it's the cheaper £496 price too.
