Hi all,

I need to travel from Dundee to Swansea for a meeting tomorrow. I planned to take the sleeper to Crewe and then change onto an ATW service to Swansea. I've done a similar journey (to Cardiff in that case) before and was able to use a Off-Peak ticket to cover the entire journey - arriving Crewe at 05:37 and leaving at 05:55. Now I'm only being offered the Anytime Return for the same journey - the SVR means waiting at Crewe until after 9:30.

Am I remembering incorrectly, or did it not used to be possible to get off the Sleeper and continue your journey without having to wait until after 9:30?

You're being sunk by XC's crazy policy of having a blanket 0930 restriction on all their Off-Peak tickets no matter the journey. This was introduced a couple of years ago to make things easier for passengers to understand. What it was actually doing was ensuring that passengers travelling longer distances had to buy Anytime tickets if they wanted to complete their journey at a reasonable time or, in some circumstances, one day.

Checking Fare History it looks like they moved to a 2V restriction code as of NFM 11 and previously had used restriction code 8X which BR Fares says is the following:

APPLICABLE DAYS

Mondays-Fridays

OUTWARD TRAVEL

Not valid on trains timed to
depart before 05:00

RETURN TRAVEL

Not valid on trains timed to
depart before 05:00

Yay! The joys of XC. <( I've managed to get some ATW Advance tickets for the Crewe-Swansea part of the journey, total cost (including berth on the way down) is £221.60 so almost £180 less than the Anytime ticket.

The effect of XC's crazy policy has, in my opinion, mostly been to encourage people on to other TOC's, split their tickets or drive instead. Fabulous!

Though in my view what XC should do is price Anytime tickets more reasonably on longer-distance flows, rather than having "Off Peak" tickets valid at all times.

That would be better than what they are doing now. Their fares policy is a mess!

Simple means more expensive!

Be careful what you wish for...
