Buying an add-on to normal journey?

Normally get a 7 day season for newport-gloucester.

One day next week I want to continue on to cardiff (and return to newport). Is it valid to just buy a return from newport-cardiff?

Should I explain to guard and but ticket from him when he checks tickets as normal just after leaving Gloucester?

If facilities are available you should buy at Gloucester station before boarding. If the ticket office is closed and there are only TVMs then yes, you can buy on board as the TVMs won't sell a fare with origin Newport.

And yes, a return from Newport to Cardiff is correct.

Yes you can and must buy that ticket if the ticket office is open. If closed then buy on board. No need to alight at Newport.

If the ticket office is closed it's best to be proactive and seek out the guard on the train, although you aren't compelled to do so. Saves any hassle should the guard not come through the train and you arrive at the gateline in Cardiff without the additional ticket. Even then, without having seen a guard, you should be allowed to purchase it there.

If you know what day you need to travel, you can buy the Newport-Cardiff ticket any day in advance (at a booking office or from the guard on-train), just ask for it to be dated for the appropriate day.

Not relevant here, but not only is it valid but with a season and non-season the train you take need not even call at the "changeover" station (it must pass though though).

Yes because surely Im obliged to buy my ticket for cardiff-newport asap. So asap is on the train on the way to newport surely? for whch I've already got a valid ticket.

I would definitely try to obtain it before going past Newport to avoid any accusations of over-riding or travelling on a short season.

Definitely before Newport; from what I've read ATW are being pretty proactive in clamping down on short-faring at Cardiff.

I am of the opinion that you are entitled to the full range of tickets from the guard at any point before Newport. Some TOCs however insist that staff only sell Anytime tickets onboard (except where no opportunity to buy) - if you find this to be the case and wish to save the 30p difference between Off Peak and Anytime Day Return fares you can buy at Newport if you have been unable to get the ticket before travelling.

Just realised I should probably have just bought a monthly cardiff - glos instead of newport - glos. 40p more so these odd journeys would have been covered.

Im guessing no issue with getting off at newport most days?

I think if you took your Newport season to a staffed station they could change it to the Cardiff season, for a proportional cost.

Other way around. It would have been 40p more for Cardiff-Glos.

Yes, you could, provided that at least 7 days validity remain.

No problem getting off at Newport - it might not work the barriers but this has no effect on validity, someone will let you out.

Surely barriers will work? In the past, I've got on at bristol parkway (got lift from glos to there) and barrier worked getting onto station.

AIUI barriers must be programmed specifically to accept tickets which are not destination/origin there. Some stations are better than others.

Be a right PITA then not having the barriers work at newport all the time then if thats the case. And then having the argument that yes even though it says cardiff its valid from newport too. (they are a bit dull at newport).
