North Country 4 in 8 Day Rover

I would like to take about a weeks break to use the North Country 4 in 8 Day Rover. I want to be based just in one location only and do day trips using the rover ticket from there.

York comes first to mind but the hotels near the station all seem very expensive or have the possibility of being rather noisy on busy roads.

Can anyone suggest either a decent hotel in York that they could recommend or another location covered on this rover that provides good access to the rail network for various rail trips.

Any help appreciated.

If you are happy with chain hotels, then IIRC there's one or two fairly near Leeds, while Shipley has an Ibis. York can be expensive, but it depends which parts of the North you want to visit.

I think York is going to be my favourite which gives plenty of opportunity for the obvious day trips using the rover from there. The Royal York Hotel right next to the station would be ideal but it is so expensive.

Anyone else stayed in a hotel easy walking distance to York station?

York is lovely and i love it being a former resident but you will pay for the tourists. Stay somewhere less salubrious imo. Leeds may be a better base service wise. I guess it all depends on your budget

There is an IBIS on Blossom Street that is quite reasonable, There is also a Premier Inn on Blossom Street but i have never got a cheap rate there. The Royal York is great but v epxensive.

There are several Hotels (Bishops/Best Western Kilima) on Holgate road along with B&B's and some nice b&b's by the River next to the Scarborugh line bridge.I am unsure of the prices.

There is another Premier Inn (York North) up Shipton Road which is a bus ride away from the station or you could always go for the Sidings on the outskirts but that is a taxi ride away from the station

If you are flush you can go for the Cedar Court in the old NE Railway HQ.

Obviously depends on where you aim to cover but Doncaster or Leeds might be more affordable for a base, both with plenty of options for routes.

York is touristy, so you'll be paying extra for that, especially if you're travelling any time between May and September.

I'd suggest Leeds if cash is an issue, there are plenty of cheaper hotels there, and you're a bit less likely to be paying top tourist dollar for them. You can usually get the Queens right by Leeds station for under £100 a night.

One of the seaside resorts (Scarborough, Redcar, Saltburn) will probably have reasonably priced B&Bs outside the schools summer holiday season, and all have fairly good services to / from ECML. Almost certainly will be a lot cheaper than York. Google search for location tourist offices to locate accommodation lists.

I have stayed in a B&B up bishopthorpe road before - there are several along there.

I got a good online b&b deal in the Queen's hotel in Leeds a couple of years ago - it was cheaper than staying in York & as it is right above the station I could see all the trains leaving the station (towards the south/west) from the window of my room.
It took about 3 minutes for get from my room to the station platform !

The Cosmopolitan in Leeds is close to the station and I managed to get a single room for £49, but it can be as high as £100 for some nights.

I have pushed the boat out a bit and gone for the Park Inn York which is really close to the station but cheaper than Royal York Hotel.

One final question - Should I purchase the rover ticket at York or can I buy it in advance at any rail station?

Take your pick, both are possible! Can buy it wherever you are in the country.

There is a limit as to how far in advance a rover ticket can be issued. I once tried to buy one more than a week before its first day of validity and was refused. I think the limit is something like 3 or 4 days.

That will be fine.

It's just Grand Central and Hull Trains services you can't use in the North.

If you're still looking for a hotel (or for reference for anyone else), the Hampton by Hilton round the corner from the station is in a quiet area and there's no "big" roads to cross. Cheap(ish) and friendly staff too.
