Confused, soon-to-be commuter seeks advice :)

Hi everyone,

I am about to start a new job working in central London (on Chancery Lane). If I buy season ticket for journey from Maidenhead to paddington, what's the best way to pay for the tube journey? I thought that if I was to purchase a season ticket for Maidenhead (MAI) to London Zones 1-6 that underground travel would be included but I have been told this is not the case and that I would still need to purchase an Oyster Card or Contactless Card.

My head is now full of mush and therefore I am reaching out to the experienced commuters amongst you for help and advice!

I thought it might be cheaper to get a season to Paddington then use Oyster for your onward trip but sadly not

No worries

You might already know this, but a quick way from Paddington to Chancery Lane is to walk from Paddington to Lancaster Gate and take the Central line - no need to faff about changing at Oxford Circus, but you will get wet if it's raining

I think that's probably what my friend thought too when he advised me about the Oyster card option. Thanks though

Who told you that a Maidenhead-London Zones 1-6 Travelcard was not valid on the Underground? I do hope it wasn't a member of railway staff.

Depending on exactly where your office is you way wish to consider getting the Hammersmith & City Line direct from Paddington to Farringdon which is around a 5-10 minute walk from Chancery Lane. Don't be fooled by the Tube Map which suggests that they're far apart!

The new S7 trains on the H&C Line are air conditioned and a little less busy than the Central Line.

Of course, once Crossrail opens you'll be able to go direct from Maidenhead to Farringdon.

don't overlook the bit about travelcard including buses. More people than I'd expect (especially those from the world of deregulated buses outside London) incorrectly assume that travelcard is just a train / underground thing.

Generally speaking, the underground is going to be quickest for the journey you describe, but it's worth remembering on occasions the underground is poorly, or if you want to visit somewhere else before going home
