Whilst posting in the constituency thread, I noticed that Knighton station is in England but the town it serves is in Wales.

Am I correct in thinking that this is the only UK station that is in a different country from the place it serves?

If you can class England and Wales as different countries...

Saltney (now closed) was very close to the border - not sure in fact which side it was on

Chester City FC ground has one goal in Wales an the others in England.
Dovey Junction was famous for having parts of it in three counties though it lost the status when RETB was introduced and the semaphores went.

On the English side. The town of Saltney is split between England and Wales. Boundry Lane has it refuse collected by Flintshire CC on one side of the street and by Chester & West Cheshire Council on the other.

Others? How many do they have then? Maybe that is why, they always lose with only having one goalkeeper, on the team sheet..

An inferior club to nearby Wrexham FC anyway....

Tref-Y-Clawdd Rugby Club play right next to the line but in Wales a good touch finding kick may go cross border if kicked with sufficient force.

Now Lynclys and Llanymynach Stations on the Cambrian line between Oswestry and Welshpool were in Shropshire and there not stations miles from the settlement either.

Llanymynech station was indeed in Shropshire; despite the slightly Welsh name! The border actually runs down the centre of the main street at one point!

Menai Bridge station was on a different landmass from the town. The station was on the mainland, the town on Anglesey!

Of course, you could say the station was named after the bridge rather than the town!

I got a train to Sheffield from Grimsby once and it stopped at Kiveton Park which serves nearby Wales. That must be in the wrong country!

I seem to recall there's a reopening plan for a station on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire Border with one platform in each county.

In Llanymynech, the boundary runs through the middle of a pub so when Wales was dry on a Sunday, part of the pub was open and the other part closed.

Regarding Dovey/Dyfi Junction, would its parts be in the counties of Gwynedd, Dyfed, and Powys?

In peace

Adam

Trying to work it out; the station is in Ceredigion, but when it had a signal box I suppose the signals could have been in Ceredigion, Powys and Gwynedd.

Same as the pub in Wisemans Bridge near Saundersfoot.
Bar was in Carmarthenshire, lounge in Pembrokeshire.
There was also a pub in Crymych the same.

It may be the only such station in the UK but it is by no means such outside the UK.

You may wish to have a look at Bayerisch Eisenstein/Železná Ruda-Alžbětín Railway station which is on the border of DE/CZ. It's very interesting if you like border anomalies!

Also Pointless contradict themselves. Andorra always counts as a country but it isn't sovereign as the French President is the king of Andorra. Similar Pointless errors include Bosnia & Herzogovina, Cook Islands which are both Pointless countries, although Cook Islands is sometimes shown as wrong!

I find the BBC's definition as biased because it assumes the Republic of China (Taiwan), Palestine, Transnistria and many others aren't countries even though they have their own government. Also they always take the side against the Greek government when they allow "Macedonia" instead of FYR of Macedonia.

Andorra is a member of the UN though - as I understand it the French President shares the title of Head of State. The Republic of China, Palestine and Transnistria may have their own governments, but they aren't member states of the UN.

Isn't it more important that a country exists in the hearts and minds of it's people (like Euskadia) rather than what the UN and Richard Osman thinks ?

That may or may not be, I was responding to the statement that the examples given show inconsistency.

I was at Basel station last week and it has a Swiss and French half. Over the Rhine there is a DB station too!

Not quite: the President of France and the (Roman Catholic) Bishop of Urgell (in Spain) are Co-Princes of Andorra.

I suppose going by UN definition - which doesn't recognize Taiwan, the Palestinian Authority, Transnistria, etc, as states - is one reasons. As for Macedonia, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office now agree with the country's own preferred name, Republic of Macedonia, as I think do more than 100 states now (although, because, mostly, of Greek objections, not teh UN). So there are certain inconsistencies here...

If only there was a station in Baarle-Hertog.
Indeed. Or Baarle-Nassau.... or perhaps some complicated combination of the two....

Wales is not a country, it's a Principality.

Wales is a country. A principality is what Wales is, a kingdom is what Scotland and England are. Luxembourg's a Grand Duchy, and Japan's imperial. It's just the title of the now ceremonial leaders which was passed down from long ago when they may have been less important.

The UK is a country made up of countries. Might not make sense but c'est la vie. :)
