I've had a look at the fares advice page and I thought I knew what was ok but my travel management company has just rung Virgin and they say it is not allowed.

Three of us want to visit a factory in Dumfries (26th May).

Stay the night in Dumfries.

Travel back the next day stopping at another factory in Preston for four hours or so.

Getting back on the train later that day to return to Euston.

An off peak return should be ok? Virgin stated that it would have to be an Anytime fare which is far too expensive.

Any advice please?

Break of journey is always allowed on the return portion of an off-peak return, so as long as you abide by the time restrictions what you want to do is fine.

Your travel management company should know this without having to defer to Virgin (but these companies often don't know what they're talking about).

Virgin clearly aren't aware of their own rules!
