Last night (Sat) I travelled on the 23.09 TPE service from Leeds to Manchester (the 22.30 from York)

I was surprised when it rolled into Leeds from the west. Does anyone know how this was achieved? Was the Garforth line closed last night?

You'll find the later trains on Saturday nights are routed some right weird and wonderful ways, to facilitate possession arrangements between York, Leeds and Manchester.

I've heard of York to Airport trains in the early hours being routed via Bradford and reversing, then running to Rochdale, Victoria and the Airport via Piccadilly!

An example of the weird routes taken is this train tonight http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y62855/2015/05/05/advanced

Runs normally to Huddersfield, then takes the route via Wakefield, Normanton and Woodlesford into Leeds (avoiding Dewsbury), then reverses at Leeds, heads back out the same way it arrived and runs to York via Woodlesford and Castleford.

Bradford is no longer used as a diversion for TPE, it has been removed from all the crew route knowledge.

The 2230 from York runs via Castleford every night, primarily to retain crew route knowledge. There are a few others which go this way at various times for the same reason, including a Hull service which runs via Castleford too.

TPE did some Caldervale diversions a year or two back... not sure if these avoided Bradford or not but definitley went via Halifax. I'm sure I've heard/read of more planned at some point in future so not sure if there's more engineering work coming up?

The weird routeings will get worse/more frequent when the Standedge/Dewsbury/Garforth route is being electrified.
Expect at least a couple of years of disruption...

If you're referring to the Stalybridge blockade, they did indeed run via the Calder Valley, but then from Milner Royd Junction through Greetland, Brighouse and Cooper Bridge to Mirfield.

Nowadays, the only way to go via Halifax and not Bradford, would be to reverse at Halifax and use the Dryclough Junction-Greetland link. And as TPE do not service Halifax anyway, that would be a pointless diversion.

One of the early morning airport trains goes Huddersfield - Brighouse - Calder Valley Victoria - Salford - Piccadilly. Annoyingly, the one that is convenient for the typical early morning flight times, when you'd have preferred an extra half hour in bed rather than the scenic route in a 185.

There's also a service that goes through Huddersfield non-stop and via Standedge, which I believe has come from Sheffield, using Wakefield - Huddersfield - Stalybridge as the diversion.

Is Milner Royd Junction just after Todmorden? I'm not completley familiar with that area of the route but definitley saw pics of 6-car 185s drifting through Todmorden during that blockade.

I can swear the very last Airport - York goes via Victoria too if I'm right?

1P02 0038 Manchester Airport to York goes via Salford Crescent, also routed from Leeds to York via Castleford, runs MSSuX 05/05/2015-08/05/2015.

When TPE services went via Todmorden, they would take the line via Brighouse to Mirfield.

No - Milner Royd is further down the line, just to the east of Sowerby Bridge, where the lines to Halifax & Bradford and Brighouse & Mirfield diverge.

The terms of Milner Royd and Hall Royd mentioned in these junctions and the word "royd" used as a suffix in settlements such as Mytholmroyd leads me to ask those forum members who are deeply steeped in the culture of the area of West Yorkshire for a historically accepted explanation of the meaning of the term "royd".

I'm afraid West Yorkshire is way more tribal than that... I can't speak for the folks of the upper Calder Valley, but in Huddersfield a "royd" is a painful inflammation in the back passage! ;)

And in Bradford this is what a man takes to become overly aggressive, too large in some places and shrinking in certain places

*Sorry for Derailing the Thread*

However TPE do this so that they can operate trains whilst retaining Route Knowledge meaning staff don't have to use day's at work only route learning but providing a service and route learning at the same time. Quite smart of them if I do say so..

Royd is an area of cleared land - the term dates from when the area would have been almost entirely forested.

It is smart of them but I've never been convinced of the merits of route learning or familiarisation during the hours of darkness!

If you know the route in the dark you will know it in the light I suppose, and they are used in the light too when there is disruption to services so they know them then as well
