Trainee Train Drivers - West Anglia Area - Cambridge & Bishops Stortford.
Greater Anglia Recruitment said:
Be part of something rewarding, by joining Abellio Greater Anglia you’ll be helping our customers get from A to B. With a staff of over 2,500, we operate a busy commuter service from London Liverpool Street to destinations across the east of England.

Our Operations Department is integral to the smooth running of our trains and we have an opportunity for enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join the team as trainee train drivers.

Your journey begins with an intensive 12 to 14 months training programme, where you will learn, understand and appreciate all aspects of the role becoming a technically competent train driver.

No one is saying the training will be easy, from classroom based learning, use of simulators, driving with an Instructor and gaining practical knowledge but the reward and satisfaction is that you will play a vital part in ensuring that our customers reach their destination in a safe and timely manner.

To be successful in this role we are looking for people who can work well on their own, are excellent communicators who are comfortable dealing with both customers and colleagues alike. An organised individual with excellent concentration and attention to detail, you will have the willingness to accept the high level of responsibility associated with this role and the ability to work effectively during times of disruption.

If working 35 hours per week on a 24/7 shift basis, including early starts, late finishes, weekend and bank holiday working is an interest then this may be the ideal job for you.

As this is a safety critical role, there are minimum criteria which applicants must meet including passing a full train driver’s assessment and interview.

Please note that you will not be permitted to take annual leave in the first six months of training.

Abellio Greater Anglia can offer you a great work/ life balance alongside a generous salary. If learning, developing and growing your career is as important as great benefits such as free travel, pension, family discounts, childcare vouchers and cycle to work scheme, then apply now, and see what we can do for you!

Blimey there's already a load up the school at the moment for both LOROL and the West.

Would you say 40 miles, 45 minutes is to far away from Bishops Stortford.

I live within easy access of the M11 but I know that can get rammed. After all, GTR say you have to get to the depot within an hour so 40 mins is good enough.

ML, all This time and FGW still not given you a date? Saying that my friend applied in Oct 2013 and she only started the course in march this year!

There's a lot of Stortford and Cambridge drivers who live far away, so long as you can get in to work alright shouldn't be an issue I don't think. I personally have to drive in every day for work as I live away from the network, but its a small price to pay.
I think there is a bit of panic at the moment, as GA are expecting to lose a lot of drivers to TFL/CR on top of the regular losses to FCC and XC at Cambridge.

Does anyone know if the wage of 27k for this is the training wage or fully qualified wage?

Quite a high wage for trainee compared to some other TOCs, then again the fully qualified rate is one of the lowest in London from looking at ASLEF's website.

Thinking of applying but live in Wales at the moment. Am I right in thinking I could state on the application form I'd be willing to relocate if offered the job, or would AGA only accept candidates within travelling distance of their depots?

It's a common problem I've had... I live in Mid Wales myself and have applied to various TOC's with a mixture of success rates... Had interviews with Northern (however - I put my mums address in Hull on the application - which is where i'd be if I got the job...) - interviews and assessments with FGW and FTPE - both of which with my current Welsh address.. and others I've done online assessments... The way I see it is that you've nothing to lose and everything to gain by applying anyway - and let them make that decision...

Via a 2.5 year dwell at Ilford and now shortly arriving at Bishops Stortford! If you want the job bad enough you'll move. You can imagine the shock moving from sunny Devon to Stratford where I moved to haha!

Can someone clarify which depots this will be based at and if the training is carried out elsewhere ie Ilford?

I'd like to apply but not if I have to live in Ilford / Stratford during training. Thank you.

Yeah they are for Cambridge and Stortford, you only spend a few months at Stratford and you'll obviously travel free on the trains so anywhere along the west route is fine to live I'd say.

Just wondered, once qualified would this vacancy be for a mainline driver or a depot driver? Or could you be considered for either?

I think I'd be biting off more than I can chew if I applied for this one although living in Cambridge would be awesome! Thanks for your help though.
